Yeah screw 3d marks gta iv is the best benchmark. -
Anyone can help me?
I would like to run the game in 1280x800 (should work)
but the maximum setting is something like 1100x650
I've added this text to the commandline: -norestrictions
This is how it's standing in the commandline:
"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe"
-norestrictions
http://support.take2games.com/cgi-b...3RleHQ9bm8gcmVzdHJpY3Rpb25z&p_li=&p_topview=1
but i still can't change my resolution.
Am i doing something wrong? -
This is ... odd ...
I turned shadow depth all the way down and the other things up and my performance went ... up? I can't tell if the fps went up or down but it seems to slow down less in intensive scenes. -
Hi!
I don't have any textures/objects.
I spent over 7 hours to get it work but nothing has helped. I tried stock drivers and most versions of Dox' drivers (with DriverSweeper). Here's my config:
Clevo M570TU
Core 2 Duo T9400
4 Gb DDR3 1033 Mhz
GF 9800M GT
Vista Ultimate 64 bit
I don't have any idea what to do now...Attached Files:

Okay, here's what I did. It's ALREADY been suggested, but I failed to follow the instructions. Here are the steps!
1) Go to "Add and Remove Programs" and scroll down to the N section. Uninstall all Nvidia drivers (there were two of them on mine. One was "nvidia display driver" and the other was "nvidia performance driver", both of them I had recently installed trying to fix this problem). Make sure they are uninstalled.
2) Download and install driver sweeper: http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
3) THIS STEP IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (all the !! marks are because I'm excited this works). You need to restart your computer in SAFE MODE. This doesn't work unless you restart your computer *** in SAFE MODE ***. Usually you do this by pressing F8 when it tells you to about 10-30seconds after you first push the power button to start up your computer.
(After you are logged onto safe mode, it may say "you need to restart to blah de blah de blah about new hardware." Tell it no, you don't have to restart.
4) Now that you are in safe mode and logged onto windows normally, run Driver cleaner. Search for ATI display drivers and Nvidia display drivers. Then hit the "Clean" button. Now close the program and reopen it, and double-check the same steps. Search for ATI and nvidia display drivers, and make sure that none are found. When this is done, restart your computer back into regular XP.
5) After I rebooted into normal mode, I ran driver sweeper a third time just to make sure. It found NO files for ati and nvidia display drivers.
6) Now I installed 180.60 (not 180.70.) Other people installed 180.48 and got it working, others isntalled 180.70 and got it working. Mine worked fine with 180.60. I assume the version of driver you use doesn't matter, so try with whatever you can find for your version of windows.
7) Restart after you have installed the drivers.
8) FLIP OUT when you realize that your textures are showing up again. I almost decapitated myself out of rage, but luckily I got this fixed in the nick of time.
Thanks to all who helped!

I followed your guide and it hasn't helped.

The solution has worked for me, but also in the discussion is that it does not work for anybody.
Also try updating DirectX to the november2008 version (I did too) -
Basically, the shadow effects are horrible, as is the lack of aliasing. Rather unacceptable considering the lack of performance.
-
anyone had it running on 8800m gts? is it an epic fail or what?
-
man, I'm disappointed and glad I didn't jump the gun and buy the game on release. I'm gonna wait a bit and beat the games I currently have (Mass Effect and Fallout 3)
-
By the way, the game was freezing everytime I started it and defrag solved the problem for me.
Would upgrading to 4 gb ram help me in your opinion? -
Specs in sig:
Everything was stuck to minimum without an OC. Frames were acceptable, but I suffered unacceptable pop-in. With an OC, I was able to add some view distance and change the aspect ratio, but the popin was still terrible. Frames, once again are fine, but there are simply just too many technical issues for this to be playable. -

is it really the physics thats causing the pop ups? Its also interesting that you were able to do 1080p on the 360 version but to do it on PC is virtually impossible
-
The 360 does not render GTA IV at 1080p (I don't even think at 720p), but rather upscales the image after rendering.
-
Wonder if Rockstar is going to do anything at all about the performance issues?

I just tested the game on my crossfire desktop.. And I'd have to say this game has some SERIOUS issues!
The settings wont go higher than 1776x1000, medium textures, very high shaders, 25 view distance, and 100 everything else. Because of the resolution my LCD has about 3 inch thick black boarders on all sides.. This is unacceptable to not be able to choose your screen resolution. And why can't I turn up the other settings to max?
In those settings I atleast get a 60fps avg, with dips to 45fps occasionally, and for some reason vsync won't turn off, also in cutscenes the fps is 32, and seems to be locked at 32. -
Where are you finding the option for vsync?
-
I thoght Crysis was badly coded (it runs ok)
But this game sound like the PC plague.
The game doesnt look as good as other games that have lower system requirements. -
Also, after playing it for some more time, even on my setup, in the same settings in my previous post, during the daytime the framerate goes all over the place from 31-60fps just driving strait down the street. The constant speeding up and slowing down of the mouse makes it hard to play, the same problem I had with it playing it on the xbox360 -
What exactly is vsync?
Does turning it off improve performance? -
but this game stresses your cpu and gpu much more + it doesn't support sli yet, only cross-fire.
-
If you can even get the dang thing to run properly. Has anybody found a solution for the textures not loading, yet?
-
Well, at least there's a card that can run the game at high settings and keep the frame rates up.
Unknown CPU with a Radeon HD4870x2.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
...hmm interesting i wonder if a 4850 crossifre could still run it over 30fps as well?
too bad this thing doesnt support SLI i would have loved to see someone with a 8800 GTX SLI on a notebook try there configs.. -
Notice the non-maxxed view distance setting? Clearly not even that has enough resources to run fully maxxed. Either that or whoever was benching it was cheating. xD
-
for those with 8800 gfx cards, just run it at lower resolutions. It should be at least playable then.
as for the rest of us...the only thing we can do is wait. -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
yep, said that right hopefully some miracle patch will come sooner then later.
-
Finally got it working. Everything set to High, auto configure, @ 1680x1060, bench speed was 20fps... CPU is having some issues, cuz the frame rate during normal play is great, 30-45fps, but has these weird jitters every ten seconds or so, where it slows down to about 4-5fps.
I reinstalled the OS, and installed 180.70 drivers, but had the same issue. I then reflashed the 0608 vBIOS instead of running 0617 on my 9800M GTX, and installed the original drivers, and now it works. Old drivers and an old vBIOS are not my choice to game with. In 3DMark 06, its a difference of 2000 points alone.
I later found a way to get the 180.43 WHQL drivers to work. Much better frame rate, now at 36fps average.
Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: High
Render Quality: High
View Distance: 32
Detail Distance: 70
Original drivers 169.somethin
Statistics
Average FPS: 20.68
Duration: 38.00 sec
CPU Usage: 85%
System memory usage: 78%
Video memory usage: 92%
180.43 Drivers:
Average FPS: 36.78
Duration: 37.03 sec
CPU Usage: 95%
System memory usage: 77%
Video memory usage: 91%
Still havin that weird CPU issue, but its a lot better now. Defragging helped a ton, the game is contantly accessing the hdd. Going to try 180.70 now.
180.70 is the culprit. Back to 180.48. Also now found a way for the 0617 vBIOS to function
Device ID 0617 w/180.48 drivers:
Average FPS: 41.62
Duration: 37.05 sec
CPU Usage: 94%
System memory usage: 81%
Video memory usage: 93%
Notice I'm using 81% of my 4GB of system RAM. Not even Crysis used near that much. This game is an extreme resource hog. -
-
Average FPS: 35.13
Duration: 37.22 sec
CPU Usage: 97%
System memory usage: 80%
Video memory usage: 92%
Dropped a good 6fps running at 3ghz vs 3.5ghz. -
Missing TEXTURES
oh my fking god, i reinstalled my drivers , and tried other drivers (using the RIGHT WAY which includes a million computer restarts and safe modes and driver sweeper). And guess what? Still no texture!?
I have no more tricks up my sleeve.
Also the game option is idiotic. I play crysis on med/high with 20~30 frames. I am forced to play this shizzle with lowest settings because I have 8600gt? Bullshizzle -
-
I guess I'll throw my gripe in with everybody else. Same sad story here. Missing textures.... I've tried all the troubleshooting tips to no avail. I bought the game on Steam since I'm living overseas right now. I'm usually not a fanboy, stand in line at midnight, pay for the Collector's edition type, but I thought this would be a really enjoyable game. I did no reseach on the game and assumed it would be like the others. Lesson learned here: I should have waited and done some reading up. I guess now I've got to wait for a patch just like everybody else.
The silver lining I suppose is I discovered DOX's Nvidia drivers and absolutely love them. This guy needs a reward or something...
I'll just have to wait for my in-laws to bring Fallout 3 when they visit at Christmas. For now, I'll finish Neverwinter Nights 2.... -
Actually it is the traffic that has the most impact on performance and here we are limited by the CPU speed or cores. Not even those with Quad cores runs the game any good. Shaders and such is only "this is hilarious" for Anisotropic Filtering
Shadows have somewhat impact too, but it is the traffic that takes the most hits. -
italian.madness Notebook Consultant
Tomorrow I'll go grab a copy, as italian shops are getting the game tomorrow.
Looking forward to benchmarking and hopefully playing it-) -
30FPS is perfectly fine whats wrong with you people?
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
i wonder why no review mentioned the poor performance and all the other issues?
something tells me they were paid off either that or they have a mega system -
Yeah, 30 fps is fine guys.
But what should be the minimum? -

Ok so Rockstar has officially recognized the fact that GTAIV is full of glitches and errors. I came across an article on a russian website: http://www.lenta.ru/news/2008/12/04/gtapatch/
In it, Rockstar states that the game can not be maxed out even on the most powerful DESKTOPS released to date. The game targets future generation machines and for now the company simply suggests to play the game on minimum or medium settings. Rockstar is also apparently planning on releasing a patch, which will adress multiple installation problems, visual performance, and the lack of SLI support (wow). They say it will be out "soon". -
then why the feck did they release the freaking game if they knew its for "Next-Gen" Systems... why the heck do they expect that the people will even buy it, and the graphics are not all that impressive that makes a guy say "Wow! this is totally nex Gen!" like Crysis did for example. it costed hardware thats true, but it used the hardware given!
-
Edit:
There you go, same bull but in english. Oh and btw, you should contact your local technical support over the phone number given to you in your manual to solve whatever issues you haveIt has also become evident that a "small" number of users are unable to launch the game at all even on high-end machines due to a fatal error coming up in the introduction sequence after a total freeze-up.

Is there gonna be a patch for that..hope so.. :s
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
very poor by RockStar and a very poor excuse for the poor performance
-
yeah that excuse is BS.
