It's slow because you are trying to run it on a 4 year old card :( R* might state that a 7900 is the min requirement, but they actually mean don't even bother without a 9800.

Oh and if you bought it via steam you cannot unpatch period (?), and via retail I think you have to uninstall and reinstall the game.

I have the dvd version of the game. Do I just download 1.0.1.0, 1.0.2.0, 1.0.3.0, and 1.0.4.0 from rockstar website then manually install them starting with 1.0.1.0 after reinstall? And, can I still play online with 1.0.4.0 or everyone online has 1.0.7.0?

You don't have to download them sequentially. All later released patches contain the fixes from previous patches.

What ever the current patch is, that is the one you need to play online.

When I had the game installed, I had patch 1.0.4 because I liked the patch, and all of my mods worked with it, but I couldn't play online.

    GTA IV is pretty demanding.
I tried it with a ATI Radeon X1950 (Desktop card) and it barely run it.
May also be because it had a crappy Intel Core Duo cpu.
