Hello guys!
Does any of you got GTA IV over steam? I'm thinking to buy it but, does it have installations limits? My retail product key just got blocked because of extended use, so I'm going to buy it on Steam if I can download it unlimited times (on same account ofc.).
Looking forward to fast answers, Thanks for reading!

I bought it on STEAM when they had it on special for $7.99 or something like that. It works just fine and there are no installation limits that I know of since it is tied to your STEAM account. It's just a very big download so remember to back up the files when you download it.

Grand Theft Auto IV on Steam

Thanks guys! My Retail CD-key got blocked for second time, even I revoke everytime before I format my laptop. Anyways, I'm going to buy Call of Duty Black Ops now and GTA IV later this week so I can finish of my on going movie projects!
The GFWL is still there right? And my savegame from retail won't work?
Download is not a problem, I have downloaded many 16GB's...
+REP to both! -
Call or email Rockstar (the publisher for GTA4), and tell them about your situation. They should re-authorize your key without forcing you to buy an additional copy.
But to answer your original question - yes, you can install the game multiple times on multiple machines (using the same Steam account) if you buy it through Steam. -
Dude, they forwared me to secure-rom or what that c*** is called! And they did even not answered my mail. I only got that auto mail back, but no answer. I have actually two retail's of GTA IV. It was ok, because I have two diffrent adresses so I could have one on each but now I'm pissed! And don't need a third one!

GFWL is based on your LIVE account, and your savegames are saved to you hard drive encrypted with your GFWL username(something like C:\Users\username\Application Data\Rockstar Game\live_encrypted_crap\savegame\)
GFWL should have your GTA IV game activated on your LIVE account already, so if you copy the savegame to your new computer and log onto LIVE using that specific account, it should work properly
unless GFWL is the one checking for install limits... but i think not... -
You mean that for savegame right?
Because for limit of installations it does.
I wonder if there is something diffrent with Steam and Retail verison. As with SA and VC, a Retail savegame would not work with VC Steam. Do you get the picture?
However, if GFWL is still there I think it will work.
Thanks everyone, I just bought of Call Of Duty: Black Ops, going to buy GTA IV later this week! -
I wouldn't reward someone for their lack of support by buying another copy from them.
I prefer the retail disk because Steam forces you to be at the latest patch which is not always a wise thing to do with GTA IV. Especially considering the potential performance reduction from the latest patch can run into 40-50%. Then you have the modding potential to consider.
If Rockstar forwarded you to Securom support then maybe they think there is a problem with your LaunchGTAIV.exe. Some time ago Securom uploaded a fix but Rockstar asked them to remove it. -
I'm always at lastest patch LaptopNut. I'm a person who likes to stay updated with that kind off stuff. Also, I play 99% of time multiplayer, so I'm foreced to anyways. Modding? Hell no!
So, what would you do if you were me guys? Buy another copy of the game, or go on rockstar/Securom and try to get one of my two product keys back? -

If I were you right now, I would go to rockstar and securom if they refer you there and complain until they get the game working for you.
However, I bought the game on steam and have had good experiences with steam in general. -
Hm, I still wonder what I should do next. One last thing, does the Steam in-game-chat work? I ask because the GFWL is allready there, I wonder if they have left this out cause of that(?)

you can even run the steam overlay in non-steam games and applications if you add them to steam (check google for adding a non-steam game) -
I did not know that! Thanks for the info, I'm new at Steem, as you may can guess
I'll email Rockstar tomorrow, and see if I can get my product keys back. I'll also keep you guys updated if you want to know how this ends (?) -
THe reason you got blocked is actually because of Games for windows live.... I had the same issue with my copy of DOW2...if you call up xbox live(same line for windows live) they will fix the issue, you just have to have some proof that you own the game... for me it was my cd key next to a piece of paper with my windows live account name
-
-
I know...when I emailed THQ about my copy of dow they told me to go to steam...then steam told me it was a GFWL issue.... turns out it was...hope to get your issue fixed!
-

Yeah, Rockstar/SecuROM do not limit your installations but Microsoft (GFWL) does. You'll have the same installation limit if you buy on Steam, because I believe that the Steam version still uses GFWL
This is what you get for buying a game with 3 different forms of DRM on it -
I did not like that. Maybe I can ask that as well in my mail. I'm at the school atm. Going to do that later, hopefully.
-
If you want to speed up the process go ahead and write your gfwl username somewhere near your cd key and take a picture of the key, the box(if you still have it) and your name, then send that with your email.... they need that to verify your owner ship of the game
-
I'm unable to find a email which I can contact them at. Only telephone numbers, any idea?
-
Try this link here -
-
call them... its easier and much quicker
-
I prefer email, as school takes my whole day. But, however, I might try that then...
-
UPDATE:
I've phoned'em today. Actually, Xbox live (Norway) did not know what to do. They did take my Xbox account, searched for this therad, and at the end the guy who help me said he had to take it further. He then noted my number, what so ever, it will take at least one week to get this solved..!
However, I'm not going to say anything, as they are wathing us
I'll let you know how this turns out -
UPDATE: XBox live has still not returned me a CD-Key, so I bought the game from Steam, and this seems to solve my problem. It now says that the CD key is now activated once with my account. Retail keys do not do that....
-
Another Update;
I've got a CD-Key now, I've only whish it could work. The new CDKey I've got does not work, the good thing of all they say that it should work, however, I now did make a video to prove this. I would like to link the video, but then I'll give my 'new' CD key to the whole NBR
I wonder how much longer this is going to take....
Two post above, you can see when I did contact xbox, 12-03-2010. Now it is 03-15-2011....
