    Hi,

    Would people mind sharing their experiences with playing GTA IV while using a keyboard and mouse?

    I'm considering purchasing the game, and potentially the 360 wired controller, if keyboard and mouse will be an issue.

    I'm just trying to figure if performance will be too much of an issue.

    Thanks for any input.

    I had better control of the character while using keyboard+mouse combination.

    Haven't played GTA4 yet but if its like the other 3 GTAs, mouse/keyboard is vastly superior to the controller, if only because of the mouse aim.

    I play it all the time, mouse and keyboard :) Even used touchpad and keyboard which wasnt bad at all :) It'll take about 10minutes to get used to the mouse camera control (well, I'm using 2000DPI so the camera swing is quick, which took getting used to, didn't bother with lowering the DPI though because it wasn't hard to get used to even using that much. :)

    I prefer the 360 controller for driving around, which is less fun with the mouse/keyboard combination.

    The on foot controls are very nice with the mouse and keyboard, but driving tends to be better with a gamepad.

    Thankfully, if you have a gamepad plugged in you can freely switch between them, which I do.

    I never thought that GTA is playable with keyboard and mouse.

    I will not buy a gamepad right now. will try first with keyboard when I get the game.

    But don't you get many keys to click which may lead you to click the wrong key in the keyboard? In gamepad the keys are positioned in such away to get it clicked easily.

    I am a console gamer and have no experience with keyboard and mouse :D except for CS.

    That is exactly what I do too, I use the controller for driving and the mouse + keyboard for shooting (much easier to get head shots :D ). Its actually a very good combo.

    I have played ALL GTA games. Mouse and keyboard combo is awesome. You will get used to it almost instantly.

    Do you refer to the built in laptop keyboard? Or you use a special gaming keyboard?

    Gamepad here, driving is a lot more fun with the gamepad than mouse-keyboard combo. However I agree that it is a lot smoother to aim with the mouse and keyboard.

    But since I got the game for my 360 first I have get used to the gamepad and now use it on my PC too. Awesome gamepad too I have the Logitech Chillstream.

    The keys are set pretty well.
    W = forward
    A = left turn
    S = backward
    D = right turn
    Space = jump
    Shift = sprint
    Left alt = crouch
    F = Enter/exit vehicle.
    ^^ thats how I've got my keys set. Feel the keyboard like that and you'll noticed its easy to hit all those keys without moving your hand at all, only your Thumb (For space and left Alt keys), your Middle, Index, and Ring finger for the WASD keys and you can either use your Ring finger or your pinky for the Shift button to sprint, personally I just use my Ring finger for the shift key. And index finger for the F key.

    And as for the mouse,
    Moving the mouse = Moving the camera.
    Left click = Shoot/punch, etc.
    Right click = Rifle scope/etc.
    Scroll wheel = changing weapon.

    Built in laptop keyboard. Plus external mouse. Touchpad is really hard for me.

    GTAIV's driving sensitivity is really bad with a keyboard and you might want a controller in addition. That is, steering a car (even the best one you can find) is difficult because you massively oversteer and accelerate too fast, and there's no way to adjust this. I hear that even with an Xbox controller (on an Xbox) the driving controls were more sensitive than previous GTAs.

    It's amusing when the 'best' car you can find/keep looking for are either big trucks or limos (which turn slower, and oversteer less) due to the (imo bad) programming of the controls.
