I'm vacationing in India right now and a few hours ago, had gone to a nearby mall for shopping. I was just checking out an electronics store and their game selection and saw GTA4 for 499 rupees, which is roughly $10. I immediately purchased it despite having doubts of it being a bootleg copy. I was especially doubtful after seeing Left 4 Dead next to it for $20.
I haven't opened it yet as I don't have a PC here capable of running it but I've Googled and there are others are shocked as well that the official copies are really being sold for only $10 here in India. I guess everyone knew how bad of a port it is?
Even though I have the 360 version, I'd like to try out the game once again with mod support, the video replay editor, better graphics available, etc.
By the way, is L4D for $20 a good price as well?
GTA4 only 499 rupees in India.

yes, that is under half of what is charged here, I would pull the trigger on that.

LOL buy l4d too!!! For $20 a buch of us just payed $37 during the steam sale and that was considered a great deal.
Also id love to hear how GTA4 plays on your system let us know -
And the prices include tax so that's even nicer. I'm shocked that these are legit copies as well, no bootlegs.
I just checked and my copy of GTA4 checks out fine, its a legit European edition. If I'm going to pay so much for a plane ticket to India, may as well score some cheap games.
They also had the North American version of The Witcher for $20 but my brother already bought the original and later the Enhanced Edition. -

wow thats amazing
They probably buy those game in bulk/wholesale i know this my dad soon is going to be doing alot of trading in india so im looking into it with him they have some interesting stuff out there -
Unvelivable, just makes you wonder how much we're being ripped off.
I paid £24.99 here in the UK, which equates to $37.87 or 1,838.39 rupees! -
when i went to china i went to some of the huge government ran electronic stores and got so many pc games dirt cheap such as steam games that did work so not sure if they were the real deal or pirated.
-
Dude Im from India and studying in the UK right now. Picked up L4D a month ago in India. Remember to register L4D or any other steam game you buy with your Steam account while you are in India itself or you wont be able to when you get back to the US cos all Valve games are regional. I forgot about this when I picked up Orange box and couldnt activate it for a year until I went back home for a holiday !!!
You just need to install and login to Steam and register your key. Dont need a PC capable of runing l4D.
Can't say anything about GTA IV though but it should be okay to instal wherever. -
Considering the wages in India I'm not exactly surprised that games cost like that since for the locals, that 10$ may actually be a regular price. Unless I'm wrong and Indians make that much money >.> It's a nice step in terms of economy though ^_^
-
By any chance, was this mall in Gujarat? My dad is in India right now, and I'd like him to get some of these if they're not pirated
-
You should buy some copies to sell them when you get home
-
Thanks for the advice, I just talked to my brother and he warned me of the same. So all I have to do is create a Steam account and register the game here? It will still work perfectly fine when I get back to the U.S right? -
It's probably a watered-down version of the game for markets with lower buying capacity. The game itself isn't affected though. It's the packaging most of the time. GTA4, Crysis Warhead, Red Alert 3, COD5, most of the newer games here in the Philippines cost only $20-25 but they come in a smaller packaging. The big box isn't there anymore, it comes in a smaller DVD-like case which is fatter (twice as thick as a typical DVD case). It still contains the usual packaging such as the manual, game codes, etc. The manuals are in black and white, though I've bought a few more expensive versions (the ones costing up to $40, bigger box, first release) of older games, they also came with black and white manuals. Nearly all the newest releases here are sold in with the smaller packaging + more attractive price tag.
The smaller packaging I'm talking about looks like this:
Some of them come with a "Games for Windows" header instead of "PC DVD" like GTA4 and Red Alert 3. -
-
Considering how you can pick up oxycodone or other prescription drugs in India for like $5 USD a bottle, it doesn't surprise me PC games are equally inexpensive.
-
On the front of the box at the bottom and on the two game discs are written in small text "For Sale Only In India" and on the back of the box, there is additional information about the Indian company that imported the game and the price of 499 rupees inclusive of all taxes.
For college, I and others have bought Indian editions of our textbooks which are identical to the American copies save for being printed in all black-and-white and being softcover but at a fraction of the price.
However this copy doesn't look to be watered down at all to me. I'm just worried that it may not fully work when I'm back at the U.S when I have to log on to Games for Windows LIVE and the Rockstar Social Club. Anyone know? -
-
I went over to China for a holiday and picked up Far Cry 2, UT3, DMC4, COD5 and 4, Fallout 3 and Crysis Warhead for a tidy sum of $17
They all work too.

Which city and which mall is this you're talking about, Rahul? I'd definitely like to go pick up one myself, here in Mumbai.
....by the way, Indians have ridiculous amounts of money lying around. It's just that they're always up for a bargain, no matter what they can afford! For anything to sell well, the USP usually is it's price.
Oh and yeah, when I picked up GTA IV for the Xbox 360, it was about INR 2500. What does it cost overseas? -
Oh... I thought they were actually watered-down versions of the ones that you have in first world countries. I thought the more compact packaging was a form of cost-cutting.
Seems like they're making you pay more there. =/ Then again, you guys earn much more than the guys in poorer countries. You should be flattered.

D@mn double post. Please delete this. Thanks!

Here in the U.S, the PC version is $50 (2500 rupees) and the console versions still $60 (2900 rupees) in stores but you can get a lower price if bought used or online.
My question is will it work when I get to the U.S, when I connect online to Steam, Games for Windows, Rockstar Social Club? My brother wants me to also buy Left 4 Dead which is roughly $20 here, much lower than back home but I hear I have to register the game here via Steam or I won't be able to play it back home??? -
-
Prices like that will really put an end to piracy over here...i hope.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
it wont work with steam unless you buy it from steam.
gamesforwindowslive should work, not sure though honestly. -
dude, put the cd in any computer and see if there're any crack folders on it! if not, then most likely you got a legit copy.
-
It is legit and was announced a month before the PC version's actual release. A great bargain there Rahul.
-
LOL, yea the third world countries has all the deals. I remember when I went to Cambodia I saw all of these pc games on sale. I bought all of the 3 version of prince of persia for like 5 bucks and this is when two thrones first came out.

Indian people can't live without a deal and chinese people can't give one -
-
All the other Non-Steam games that I bought installed and worked fine in the UK.
It is quite cool that games are cheaper in India. I wouldnt say that games are too cheap comapred to the average salary, Id say the pricing is decent and affordable by someone who has the cash for a gaming comp in India. Computer hardware is quite expensive in India. About 10 % more than prices in the UK which is more expensive than the US but atleast retailers in the UK have hardware deals.
The only downside is irregular and unreliable release dates. Some games release within a week of the US release date while others can be months later -

It is because for one CNET had an excellent article stating why the video game industry is recession proof. It basically said that throughout time whenever the economy was bad people were looking for entertainment and CNET was right if you look at anything relating to entertainment they have gone up profit wise.
Video games will always be high even during a true reccession, hence people will always be looking for something to do during that time. -

Right now I don't have a PC good enough to test the installation, so I would like to know if I have to make my cousin return it or it is any other way to do it right. Thanks!
P.S. In a couple of days I should have a new pc to test it on... but I would like to know the compatibility as soon as possible! Thanks again! -
I think the deal is with those things you have to register it from an india IP address, than you can use your account that you created in india, Anywhere you want?

Darn, I should have bought Left 4 Dead there for $20 as well since GTA4 ended up working. -
I will kiss my cousin!
I can't wait to play online! Thanks again!

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I'm going back to visit India in late December/January and am sure to pick up some games there. I had only gotten GTA4 last time because I was afraid it wouldn't work here in the U.S but it did. Even if a game doesn't work here because of the region, I'll just crack it. I think I'll buy GTA4 again for a friend since its only $10.
I'm sure there is a website in India that sells games, similar to Amazon where I could see the MSRP, official prices of games. Anybody know where I can check prices of games there?
I guess I will postpone game purchases and buy games like Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2, DragonAge: Origins there if they are cheaper.
EDIT: The Sims 3 is only $20 there, so jealous.
GTA4 PC for only $10 in India!
