I'm looking at a Toshiba Qosmio x505-q885, and one of the few things holding me from buying it is the GFX card.

I know the GTS 360m isn't the darling here (that's the 5870), but realistically, is it that big a difference? Looking at NotebookCheck's benchmarks, there's nothing the 5870 can handle that the 360m really suffers at, and they both choke on Crysis Ultra. I don't know what DX11 will really bring in terms of GFX performance, but will the 5870 really excel that much at it?

If the Qosmio had a 5870, I'd go for it no questions asked; I just want to know if the 360m is really that lousy a compromise.

Be patient, you only posted less than 2 hours ago. I'm sure people will respond to your thread, just give it time. In fact, in the forum rules it states that you need to wait at least 24 hours to bump your thread, because we figure that's a reasonable amount of time for people to see new (and old) threads.

Actually, the 5870M performs decently at Crysis on Ultra. On my 1600 x 900 machine, anyway.

A rough guess from me puts the GTS 360M as about a third worse than the 5870M, give or take a few frames in some games.

The 360M would be ok if it has GDDR5. But with DDR3 I wouldn't want it.

I have seen people on this forum mention that the GTS 360M has a 128 Bit bus and less shaders than the GTX 260M. If that is true then you are looking at a huge difference and a vastly inferior card. Having said that, it also comes down to what resolutions you will be playing at since that is where the bandwidth really comes into play.

The Qosmio x505-q885 does have GDDR5, and resolution of 1680x945.

    I think 128 bit bus + GDDR5 = 256 bit bus + GDDR3.
So the bandwidth shouldn't be a problem.

The 260m only has 16 more shaders.

With GDDR5 it's not a bad card, if you like the toshiba then I say go for it.

It will run Crysis on medium-high at about 50fps. Not as good as the 5870 or the 480m, but what do you expect, right?

it should be a downgrade but longevity , the 5870 is better.. qosimo X300 was excellent but my only issue with X505 series has been GTS250M, GTS360M which are really a dowgrade over some of the X300 set ups..

Yeah...I think the X300/X305 was Toshiba's only true high end notebook.

Only because of the dual SLI Nvidia GPUs...I'd settle for a 460m at this point.

even the single 9800M GTX was way better than the GTS360M... really the GPU is a big downgrade over that although the X505 is cheaper than X300.
