    First post here.

    So my question is thus:

When nvidia finally releases the 1080 Ti, what are the chances of a laptop version of the card showing up in a near future refresh?

I understand that the 1080 Ti isn't even a thing yet, but it's reasonable to assume that they will release one sometime in Q2 based on past history. Even after nvidia started putting desktop grade 980s in laptops, I don't believe they ever put a 980 Ti in one.

I'm debating whether I should push off my laptop purchase for another 2-3 months to wait for a desktop grade 1080 Ti to be an option, or am I dreaming?

    Thanks.

If they ever do include a laptop with the 1080ti, expect only a total of maybe 2 models in the world that will support, it and will cost an arm and a leg.

In my opinion, it's a dream and you should buy and enjoy if you can. The more time it takes to buy, the closer you are to a new cycle of "new products" and you will be stuck with "maybe I should wait for next gen X device". You chould be playing right now :p

They did put a 1050Ti in a laptop, so its possible to have a 1080Ti.

Are you even considering the TDP difference ? The heat generated? The power required??

They probably built a good cooling system like what they did from previous generations e.g from 980 - 980 SLI - 1080 - 1080 SLI, as for power we already have a 780W AC power brick.

    @ D2 Ultima LOL I said possibly.

This is part of my concern as well, and is also the reason we have never seen a Titan-variant put into a laptop. Too much power draw, too much heat. Doesn't mean it isn't possible, but that's why i'm throwing this question out there. Thanks.

On some level, I know you're right and I should just go with what we've got right now. Waiting for the next tech is an endless loop. I just know it would bug me to death to know I bought something 2-3 months before the final Pascal card arrived. OCD much? Lol.

How about AMD RYZEN + VEGA, now this is a question.

Your logic is the non-computable part. "1050 Ti exists, therefore 1080 Ti can exist too!"

Good thought, I'm not opposed to the idea at all. My concern here is that It's looking like Vega is going to be a May/June release (rumors), and may not be any more powerful than the 1080 is right now. We don't have enough info to go on, but with the 1080 Ti we can make a good assumption (based on 980Ti compared to the Tian X Maxwell) that it will perform almost the same as the Titan X Pascal. Since we already have performance benchmarks on that, it makes planning easier.

Would Sager/Clevo even refresh their units to use AMD hardware?

Less power, less heat right? But they claim that RYZEN will perform better than Intel.

tbh I don't know, I also asked about this several times but everything is just a speculation.

You... are basing this off "Ti" in the name. 1080Ti is ill-suited even if it IS possible. You would need to use a massive heatsink like the Grid in the P870DM3 just for one GPU. It'd be the P870DM all over again, one single card vs two slightly weaker ones. But unlike that model, only 1 notebook exists where a heatsink could be adapted and it isn't worth it to make I think.

Clevo P870DM3 with vapor chamber heatsink should be able to at least handle a single 1080Ti or Titan XP

See that's what I was thinking. Then you have the best single card solution without having to worry about the headaches and compatibility/support issues of SLI. Espeically with the 1080 Ti probably coming out within the next month or 2.

The problem is there's no precedent for using an xx80 Ti (or Titan for that matter) in a laptop, especially not since they started using the desktop equivalent GPUs.

Problem is that with SLI you've got double the surface area since you have two dies. Running a Ti will require extracting a lot more heat from a same surface area single die, and restraints of a laptop may not allow it. I'm sure it could be done, just it would probably have to be unique for a single high TDP GPU.

If we've learned anything from Razer (and Nvidia), it's that you can fit any GPU into a laptop as long as you power-limit the heck out of it :D Sure, performance will be crippled, but at least you get to put the words "1080 Ti" on the box. So yes, I think it's quite possible select models may include this GPU.

There will be no nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080Ti for laptops. NVIDIA is reserving that giant for desktops only. Conjecture aside...it will not exist.

I will be buying an MSI GT73VR 7RF laptop today with GTX 1080 VGA.

The reason why I will not wait for a possible GTX 1080 To for laptops are because of the following:
    1) I want a laptop with an 1080p 120hz 5ms screen and currently only MSI has this so I can not even consider other laptop manufacturer. Why I don't want anything higher than 1080p is because for a 17' size screen 1080p is still perfect, I do not feel the need to go higher because due to the size of the screen I don't feel higher resolution comfortable. Yes the picture is more sharp but I would need extra settings to make text readable. Not to mention that games would feel less smooth due to lower fps.

    2) Price would not change significantly. Yes VGA price might drop some like in the desktop line, however due to the increase of memory and SSD price on the international market the higher priced memory would balance back the scale.

    3) In my opinion as I said I prefer 1080p AND For this a GTX 1080 is still enough and will be enough in the future too. A GTX 1080 To in my opinion is for 1440p 5ms 120 Hz screen users so the game they play could be as smooth as it with 1080p resolution using a GTX 1080.

So my thinking might be flawed but in my opinion it is pointless for me to wait months for a GTX 1080 Ti.

I'm sure they can. It'll require a change in the heatsink and possibly Clevo's standard mxm 3.0 design, but I'm sure it's possible. Maybe we'll see it happen for the 11XX series.

You are still focusing on heat issues. Trust me, if NVIDIA could make a 1080Ti that would perform virtually the same as the desktop version, in a card that would fit in a laptop, they would.

I think it's possible but highly unlikely since not many machines would be capable of dissipating the heat if it were a matter of a refresh. I think the DM3 with a Vapour Chamber could easily take it, not so sure about SLI though.

I'd love a 1080ti since I'm a single GPU kind of guy these days.
But I'm happy enough to wait things out and have a gtx 1180 MXM upgrade just slot in. To add to that, I'm still keen on seeing what the 1080 can do once @Prema's VBIOS sets it free.

It's too early to make a claim whether Nvidia is making a GTX 1080Ti for laptop or desktop exclusive only, you can't take it from just one forum member unless he can point us to an official announcement or article.

    Wtf??

First gtx 980 in mxm module = 200w
    Revision = 180w

    1080 desktop = 180w
1080 laptop = 150w (low frecuencies and other optimizations)

    1080ti desktop = 220w
Possible 1080ti laptop = 200w (The same optimizations)

The same consumption of The first 980 mxm module, its possible? Definitely yes.

If The 980ti was not introduced in laptop, it was because their 250w of consumption...

    This generation is more efficient.

AFAIK for the Pascal turn Nvidia stopped providing MXM designs, it was completely up to the vendors.

Nvidia isn't providing any Pascal laptop cards, design or fab.

So any vendor that can order the 1080ti parts from Nvidia could fab their own MXM design.

    Guys, listen @Donald@HIDevolution .

There are so many issues with traces and multi layer PCBs on mobile. Its not a simple cooling thing.

Even if it is possible for 870dm3, you want to pay 4k usd for it??? Because thats gonna be the minimum price of entry to pay for the R&D.

And also, the cooling issue isnt just watts, your calculation on that side failed to account for the die's thermal resistance.

I've addressed every issue I could think of:

Modified vapor chamber heatsink > no cooling issues
Modified Clevo MXM 3.0 design > fixes bigger die size issue
Power should not be an issue, our DM3s already have two power connectors that can power a single 1080Ti with the mxm slot + 2 connectors.

The only issue is R&D cost and nVidia not wanting to allow someone like Clevo to do so. Cost would probably be $2,000 for a card though for us consumers.

There are three laptops I can think of that could run a single desktop 1080Ti or even Titan X :

Since the 1080ti doesn't share the same similarities to other GPUs as Ti's normally do, perhaps we could see a 1080ti(N) more so by nomenclature rather than outright design.
Similarly like the 1070N was to its desktop counterpart.
    Pure speculation.

Off topic here. Isn't the GTX 1080 supposed to be the Titan X of yesteryear? I mean it performs it. Correct me if I am wrong. we technically have a titan in laptops in the form of 1080's.

Pascal vs Maxwell. 180W vs 250W. Not remotely the same thing. Yes, performance is similar, but it's not a Maxwell Titan X in a laptop. The biggest issue comes down to thermal density, and cooling the chip. With laptop tech so far, ~ 200W is the best that they can do at the moment in a laptop chassis. Even if you have SLI 1080's, you still have twice the surface area (two chips vs one) to cool it as opposed to 250W on a single die.

I've read this before, anybody know why nvidia would abandon mxm when they own the rights to it?

Nvidia don't own the rights to it. It's a non-proprietary socket designed by a committee. Since Nvidia doesn't actully build any MXM cards, only OEM's do, it's not up to them. It's whether or not they will sell the components for OEM's to manufacture their own cards.
