How does the GTX 260 (desktop) compare to the 9800m GTS (laptop)? What type of FPS figures/3dmark differences are there?

Errr....massive difference. You're basically looking about 1/4 the speed.

GTX260 desktop (single card) is a bit weaker than 4850/70m Crossfire, or GTX260/80m SLI (dual card setups), probably until the 5 series ATI mobile parts, and Nvidias ...well whatever they decide to do update, you're not going to find a single mobile card comparable to a high end/ethusiast desktop one.

Stuff would still be playable on a 9800GTS, but dont expect 1920x1200, ultra high graphics...

Thanks. I should clarify, I have experience with the 9800m GTS and I'm wondering how much of an improvement the desktop GTX 260 would be.

I found some 3dmark06 figures (1280x1024) giving 15000ish for the GTX 260 and 8500ish for the 9800m GTS. Does that sound about right?

What FPS gains (percentage-wise) are there in games like Crysis, COD4, and other modern games?

Depends on what resolution and setting, but easily doubles FPS in almost every situation, if not more.

CPU plays a big role in 3dmark 06, it's better to look at the individual gpu scores. 8500 seems low for a 9800m gts, unless it's paired with a low-end c2d. But as everyone else is saying, a desktop 260 is much better. The 9800m gts has the same specs as a desktop 9600 gt (besides clock speed).

The 9800m GTS is a mobile version of the desktop 9600 GT. You do the math....
