I was looking at 2 laptops for use to create 3D solid models for CAD work, one is the Toshiba Qosimo 18.4" X500-165/8GB RAM with GTX 460M, the other is ACER Aspire Ethos 8951G 18.4"/16GB ram with GT555M, I'm inclined to go with the higher ram option but was wondering if the GT 555M was ok for the application. Also can you get laptops with larger monitors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    hi and welcome to nbr
the 460 is way more powerful than the 555 which runs on optimus technology so is great for battery life but its only a medium card for gaming or intensive software.
out of the 2 its the toshiba.

if you're looking at doing some high end CAD work then you'll be better off with a more expensive NVIDIA Quadro based card... usually they'll give about 5 or 6 times the performance of a GTX card, frankly you'll prob not see much of a difference between a GTX460M and a GT555M in CAD applications

but then again Quadro cards are only suited to professional graphics apps whereas the GTX460M and GT555M will be good enough to play the latest games

in terms of gaming performance the GTX460M is faster, but the GT555M is VERY overclockable, surpassing a standard GTX460M after a bit of tweaking, having a GT555M myself (the dell version at least with 192bit mem bus and 144shaders) I can tell you it's more than a mid-range laptop card (of course you could also overclock a GTX460M too making that a moot point :p)

    A fan of 18.4" screens I see :D

Another monster 18.4" unit is the Alienware m18x; can come with dual-GPUs if desired.

Don't forget about all the Clevo x8100 variants, I'm sure some site has a configurator to add a quadro card to it. Not to mention it uses the standard mxm interface unlike the Acer or Toshiba

Hello, this can be a stupid question but,
If i overclock the GT555 and get the same clocks of a GTX460 will i have the same performance as if i had the 460, or its still weaker?

    Regards

well the thing is, the 555m has 144 cuda cores and is clocked at around 750, if you have the best 555m card available as the models vary, the 460m has 192 cuda cores and is clocked at 675. so if you got the same clocks it would actually be slower, but you could over clock it and come close. generally when i compare cards of the same generation i just multiply the number of cuda cores and the gpu clock, to get a ratio of relative performance.

that's a very good point about the nvidia cores. At equivalent clocks, the 555 will always be slower because it has less nvidia cores. The 460m is just the more powerful card

    plus...all 460m's will overclock to

    800 core
    1600 shaders
    1480 DDR5

AT those clocks, you have a free 560m upgrade and the 555 will not be able to match it

just keep in mind it doesnt scale exactly between sli and single cards as there is some loss in performance, due to the less than perfect scaling of sli.

a gt555m clocked at 770/1000 will beat a standard gtx460m... but seeing as you can overclock the gtx460m aswell it's just not as good a card in the grand scheme of things
