    Hey folks,

I've been looking for ways to boost my g51jx-x3 which has a GTS 360m. GTX 460m is the same MXM 3 type B. The offers I see online are for GTX 460m's pulled from Clevo laptops. Does this have any chance to work on mine?

ACTUALLY the gts 360m in the g61 may not be reversed.

    But its MXM 2.1.

I talked to a certain Ebay seller.
Apparently the gtx 260m of the g60j are some of the ones that are not reversed...

You should open up your laptop and make sure that you have MXM 3.0, not MXM 2.1 reversed or non reversed.
There is definitely a gtx 260m out there which you can upgrade to for a reasonable performance boost.

Thanks for helping me out. Yeah it's already open for better cooling. How do I verify the MXM version?

The shape of the connector is very different. You can put the type names into google an see but basically 2.1 is thinner with its notch towards the right edge (or left edge for a reversed Asus). MXM 3.0 on the other hand is fatter with the notch in the middle.

It appears to be 2.1 with the notch on the right edge (the notch is towards the front end of the chassis. I guess that's bad news. But there are some GTX 260m out there which can fit, innit?

I wonder if the 360M would work in an Acer system, some people might be interested in giving it a go if/when you look to sell it.

Why GTX260M when you have the GTS360M?

    They're like the same card.

360m to 260m seems kinda.... pointless.

    256bit mem vs 128bit (I assume the 360M is DDR3).

112 vs 96 shaders, plus the 96 shaders cant be fed all the time.

Meaker, the gts 360m will not fit, at least not in most chassis. Also its incredibly doubtful any machines would have BIOS support. If it did work however it would be pretty awesome I agree.

I mentioned a MXM 3.0 A gts 360m which was different - that one was gddr5. I will have 2 of them soon. A gddr3 gts 360m seriously has NOTHING on the gtx 260m. gddr5, maybe.

I was offered 150$ for the non reversed asus gts 360m, and I almost took it for the exact purpose of getting it to work on other laptops, but I simply do not believe its possible. If only some of the higher end MXM 2.1 machines were not built so efficiently and had more room in the chassis... ;)
Here, you'll see what I mean:
nVidia Geforce GTS 360m GPU for laptops / notebooks OBO - eBay (item 200529402525 end time Feb-06-11 11:43:09 PST)

The OP made one post saying it was reversed and another identical one saying it wasnt  But they could have a non reversed card that would actually fit.
I just wouldn't bet the asus card has any BIOS or EEPROM at all. That would be the problem.

260M has about 10% over the 360M all up, yes it has a few more shaders but more importantly the 360M has only half the ROPs/TMUs/etc so when you look at higher levels of AA the diff can blow out to 30-40% in some rare cases, IIRC. Memory is not an issue, 256bit GDDR3 vs 128bit GDDR5 equals out in bandwidth since GDDR5 transfers twice the bits/clock (I never heard of a GDDR3 360M until this thread, but it would suck hard.)

But remember they're both based off the core design of the 8800GT from nearly 5 years ago. They're both outdated.

IMO it is absolutely not worth the hassle or money for such a small performance boost.

but you can change it to some radeon like 5870 which is 25% faster than gts 360 at stock speed

Yes and your notebook vendor decided to place it on the old kind of connector.
