28nm GPU's are expect to be released Q4 of 2011 for desktops. Does this mean they'll be available right away in laptops too?

Does it make any sense to wait for the next best thing or just buy the 485m now?

The 485m is an excellent card. No need to wait... you can always wait in the world of technology, there's always something new to be released "in just a couple of months".

That's for you to decide if you're in dire need of more horsepower... 28nm will be big that's for certain, but I wouldn't bet on it before 2012. On a side note it's a common thought that there's always something better a few months away and that you're better off buying without second thoughts. I tend to disagree as there are both incremental and radical increases in performance, the second being more seldom. 28nm should be of the second type.

I expect the average 28nm gaming GPU (I mean replacing GTX 460/560M) to have similar or even better performance next to a GTX 485M while being much cheaper and consuming less & the new high-end to be at least 40% more powerful.

    I think 28nm is tempting...

The 460/560 485 and soon to come 580 are all built on proven technology that had quite the rocky start. I'd get something along those lines. When the 28mm gpus roll out pass on the first models then take a good look at the first revisions of those.

You can always spot the pioneers.... they are the ones with the arrows in their backs. Don't be a pioneer.

nonsense. there was a trend of die shrink with each gpu iteration, this year didnt happen due to the incompetence of TSMC.

They wont change the manufacturing process within the same arch, unless the power is too competitive, or you are a rebranding nut

Buy the 6970m unless you need the Nvidia features. Waiting is a losing game unless you are certain of time frame and availability.

Desktop cards tend to be available for purchase months before their mobile counterparts. There's also a lag time for mobile cards between when they're announced and when you can get a notebook that uses one delivered.

Nvidia may have a 28nm GPU out by the end of the year but it'll likely be 2012 before you'd be using a notebook with one.

AMD will have desktop 28nm out by the end of the year but next-gen mobile cards won't launch until CES in January '12 and won't start selling before, earliest, March. Their top mobile card might not come until even later.

What, if anything, are you using now? That would be the key factor in whether or not you could justify waiting.

Not if I have my heart set on the next-gen graphic cards. And I mean, it STOPS at the 5xx series for NVIDIA.

They have to come out with a card sometime. And by sometime, I mean within the next 6 months. If they can do that, I'm fine.

Lol, those threads are hardly reputable. I thought you had your info from like a e-tailer, or an info site like CNET, Anandtech, etc.

    1) Fudzilla says it's this moth
    2) Some Clevo reseller has already listed it and said to be shipping it on the 22nd
    3) Nvidia roadmap said june/july
    4) The resellers in the forum have said they are under NDA and said to hold on a bit.

Pretty sure it will be within a month.

In any case GTX 580m will be close to 485m performance, probably a little less power consumption. But if you need a laptop now, 6970m or 485m top the crown of single GPU's for the moment. Only thing that nVidia *should* do is drop the price of the 580m by $200 from the 485m, but that probably won't happen.
