Ok so I picked up a 1250 watt PSU, an ASUS Extreme Rampage 3 board and a few GTX 480 cards. I threw one in and am averaging around 13,000-14,000 PPD. Just trying to see what everyone else is seeing with their GTX 4XX cards. About to throw the next one in and then the other four for a total of 4 GTX 480 but I am waiting on my other PSU to come in. I hope to do around 60,000 a day with the rig when running and thats everything on stock settings, then it will be time to play with the overclocking.

Ummm, why would you get GPU's to do folding...?
Correction: why would you buy the most expensive ones...

GPUs are much more powerful than CPUs when it comes to parallel tasks, that's why. Besides, I'm sure that rig will be used for gaming once in a while.

Also, considering this is a desktop question, it shouldn't be in these laptop forums.

I just don't understand why he'd buy that many of the highest end GPU's, well at least you'll be saving tons of overhead heating costs, turn the heat off cause those 4 furnaces will be pumping out enough to keep it cozy..

LOL...the machine is a gaming machine, but more importantly its for folding. After a good friend of mines sister passed away from cancer. i told them that I would do ANYTHING that I could to help them. I have helped with donations for the cause, helped with walks, and now folding. You never know what will come of this, and if a simple $3,000 build can help save someone form all the pain that i had to go through and see, then sign me up for another 10 systems cause I would NEVER wish any of it upon even the worst of people

Good call man, i understand better now. My best friend's grandfather is dying of lung cancer right about now, 5% chance of survival, from smoking of course. Saddens me, but since he knows he's going, he's smoking the best of cigarettes.

I highly admire your good intentions, people, and I bow my heart for the wishes like this.

Unfortunately, though, taking into account the evil nature of our world and previous experiences, I am afraid that the following will actually happen instead of our wishes:

    1) A lot of people will spend their time, electricity, and money for folding.
    2) After the cure will be found some dude in charge of the project will get the grant or a Nobel prize (not us)
    3) The cure will be sold for huge $$$$ and an average Joe will have to pay the SAME price regardless or the fact whether he folded or not.
    4) People who really need the cure will probably not get it because of the lack of money and only some top elite riches will be happy.

    Cruel world!

Better to have an expensive cure (which will eventually get cheaper, maybe) than no cure at all.

this is true....but IF something is found I would rather be in debt up to my eyes and have my loved one that not have them and have all the money in the world.

In all reality a cure probably will not be found, but there is still that small chance. Even Vijay says hes not sure what will come from this. But, IF something does I want to be apart of this.

There is none thing wrong with doing Folding@home, I did it on 2 laptops with Nvidia cards, then with the processors free I would do BOINC which is similar to Folding. But now I am down to 2 laptops doing BOINC and 1 Folding (same 2 laptops), from 5 doing BOINC and 2 Folding (5 same laptops). The rest are getting fixed and will up by next week. I still used the laptops and abuse them at the same time. I dont have a reason to do it, just do. Like the Nike commercial, Just Do It.
