Dear guys, Im planning to buying the new Alienware m17x R4. Please can anybody suggest which graphics card should I get. GTX 660M or the GTX 675M. I heard that GTX 660M is Kepler and GTX 675M is Fermi architecture. What advantage does it have over the other. Also, GTX 660M supports PCI E 3.0 and GTX 675M supports PCI E 2.0. What improvements will it provide.

No one knows until we see some real numbers. I suspect that the GTX 660m will perform well but not as well as the 675m. Only speculation of course. The difference in PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 2.0 is minimal. On fully powered desktop GPUs it is around 3% maybe. I'd say less than 1% in a laptop so I wouldn't worry about it. I would say wait for a few days until the 7970m becomes an option. That card screams.

It would be strange to think that the GTX 675M utilises the old architecture, in fact - I find it unlikely.

isnt 675 still based on the fermi architecture? more heat, but more performance than the 660, which is based on kepler

I suggest you wait for other products from nvidia. Considering what the Radeon HD7970m has done performance/price wise, both the 660m and 675m look like very bad products.

675m is quite stronger than 660m. Even if it is old architecture. They just didn't release a powerful Kepler yet, which I suggest you wait for. Competition is good! haha

With all the new tech just coming out it is best to wait a month or two, that way you will probably get an Ivy bridge and be able to make an informed decision on the GPU.

Is there any information on when the GTX 660m is actually being released? I've scoured the forums but I don't think I've seen anything definite

After yesterdays fun my opinion is get the 7970 and wait for them to build your unit. prelims from an m17 user show its as fast as a 580SLI config in games but with much better minimum framerates

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/658084-amd-7970m-available-buy.html

the 680 may come up a bit faster later in summer, but this thing is priced close to a 675 with over twice the speed

why? its been so many times its not even funny, same chip new name. but a few users have even gone as far as flash the 675 bios onto a 580 and nothing can tell them apart

Before I discovered this forum I had the same idea as Silverfern. I really hope that AMD kicks Nvidia ar*e in terms of sales this time around, so maybe just maybe Nvidia will stop this renaming bullcrap and start producing some great chips.

Hope that I can fit the HD7970m in my msi gt683, looking forward to get enough cash to buy one and try it out.

im sort of doubting it, i dont have solid info but think your 560 is soldered to the board and not an MXM card. secondly Im in doubt as to if that system can take the power and heat of a 100watt card ( 580, 675, 6990, 7970 )

Im not 100% sure since i cant open the laptop due to voiding the warranty, but i think that my card is and MXM 3 570M card.

I am able to OC the card to 800 Core/ 925 Mem, which had to reduce the core clock to 775Mhz due to ambient heat.

Im more worried about the heatsink, since it will require (my guess) a different heatsink from the nvidia one.

MSI GT series use 100% standard MXM modules (even the GT555M GX780) and have taken GTX580M and HD6990 series graphics cards.

He will just need a new heatsink and a 180W PSU.

My system started out with a 560M.
