    Ok lads and ladies

i bought an MSI GE 60 recently because it was a killer deal (usually around the 800 mark and i got it for 630).

One of the appeals of the laptop was that the gtx 660m was a pretty nice overclocker. A lot of people saying they have got near the 1000mhz mark ( usually its at 835mhz boost on the core, i think). It is sitting pretty cool when on the cooling pad i have for it and has a lot more headroom on stock.

Currently I cant seem to make the core boost budge with either MSI afterburner or EVGA precision. I can change the memory clock though, which to me is rather odd. I slap 135+ mhz on the core and say + 200 mhz on the memory and the core just wont budge when ingame but the memory will. Not only that it sometimes refuses to boost at all ( locked on 400mhz core and 800 mhz mem) in games when i attempt to OC it.

I cant seem to see a power target in either of the programs like when i OC my 780 and voltage control is ofc not available. I might just be missing a trick here, any ideas? Is Nvidia Inspector a better bet?

    Cheers

I am not sure why you're not able to overclock the core at all, since that +135MHz is supposed to be allowed in stock conditions. Anyway, take a look at this thread and try using nVidia Inspector with the .bat files and see if that works. The method is not compatible with every nvidia driver version, but it worked for me on the first one which began with 320 (it was 320.18 if I remember correctly).

If that fails as well, you can flash a modded BIOS, which simply unlocks the sliders in all OC programs (such as Afterburner), you can PM me for the BIOS file.
Definitely don't settle for no overclock though, because you can get significant performance gains from it (I am able to get my 660M up to 1250/2700 on stock voltage, for example).

With MSI Afterburner you normally need to edit the EULA agreement on it before you can OC it beyond manufacturers recommendation... have you tried this?

thanks guys, with MSI afterburner i can move the slider + 135mhz but it just doesnt increase the boost when i hit apply / am playing a game. Althoguh i did just see this in another thread

"You can't overclock with the shipping driver for 660m version of GE60, it reverts to default the default one second after setting it.
You can see this on the afterburner chart. Someone else discussed this earlier."

I saw an nvidia driver update the other day but havent had time to install it. this sounds like it might be the issue. I will whack it up by 135mhz then give a go at a modded bios. This isnt my main comp. I just want a solid 60fps with dota2 maxed out. I have a 2700k @ 5ghz, 16gb ram and 780 in my main rig ( got a 120hz screen coming tomorrow too :p ), this laptop is just for when i lan with mates and my GF's "home" computer ( when i aint away with it ;) )

Be sure to watch your temps closely while overclocking in a MSI. My 675m in my old GT70 would get insanely hot, even with the system fan on max, without a cooling pad. Was the worst cooling I've ever had in a laptop.

I have a cooling pad and while gaming i think i only get in the late 50's/early 60's so plenty of headroom. I am no newbie to overclocking, just never really done it on a lappy. Its a far cry from my watercooling setup but i am sure i can work some magic.

adding the maximum on afterburner (+135) will also let you use the boost... so you overclock to over 1000mhz on the core.

As noted, with MSI Afterburner be sure to edit the EULA in the cfg file. Also try nVidiaInspector.

Also some drivers just won't allow overclock. Try some beta drivers, I've had best luck with beta over WHQL with overclocking.

Man, before using laptop you always need to flash to the latest BIOS unless you heared smth bad about it.
Before writing about your problem in newely created thread you always need to post about it n an owner's thread.
I would answered your question as soon as saw it. Well, that gonna be a lesson for you :) All you need is to update bios to the 514 version because 513 and earlier had exact problems you are talking about.
Also if you want to OC past 135MHz limit, you need AFTER flashing 514v. to flash modded bios by Prema. Just google it.

    Welcome.
