nVIDIA actually did a better job at the GTX 690 power circuitry this time, unlike the 590.

That is something! I wish I could have this horse power in a laptop...

With no overvolting it is extremely rare to see a Kepler reliably function north of 1.3GHz. 1.5GHz is just nuts; I strongly suspect some warranty-voiding modifications were made to the power circuity and BIOS. Oh wait...liquid nitrogen? OK, this benchmark result is useless.

i'm not sure who told you that you need to 'know science' to overclock
basic overclocking is a piece of cake. its when you have to fighting for WRs and you have to manually control every voltage line on the board that things become tricky. the rest is just a matter of patience. -
Well I always thought that playing with voltage was part of it, perhaps rewiring the GPU (lol) and stuff like that. Disappointing

Talking about power..

Amazing, my 6990 only achieve 13xxx graphics score when I oc to 1GHz.

my play desktop at home has SLI 670's overclocked *slightly that gets 60k in vantage. I don't know if that is good anymore. Still waiting on my K processor, but apparently the IVY desktops haven't been OC'ing very well so far

that sounds alot more warranty voiding than a bios setting... :S -
At the current time there is no known software that can control the GTX 6xx reference PWM chip to raise voltage on core/mem/aux.
This is why I'm waiting for a MSi Lightning edition GTX680
