I know the M275 is universally hated on this board but assuming the same CPU, which one would truly be better? Is 4GB DDR3 on the better family card really better?

The RAM (amount or type) is really not as important as the chipset underneath it.

The 850m is held back by the DDR3 instead of the GDDR5, but the Nvidia Maxwell chipset is just that much better than the R9 M275.
Assuming the 275 is another rebrand of the 270 slightly overclocked, around 25-30% better even with the DDR3.

    It isn't about hatred.
There is nothing wrong with the AMD, it is just slower than the Nvidia.
Maxwell is new technology that AMD does not current have an answer for.
Hopefully AMD will come out with something new soon.

Then obsolescence awaits you...these cards are pretty pitiful anyway. Save your bucks and wait 3 months. AMD are bringing out Tonga then at least.
