What about fan noise under heavy load then? How does it fare with MSI GT72 Dom, AW, and Asus G750 ?

I heard complaints of loud fan noise on the AW in this forum but none on the other two brands.

Loud fan noise is part of the trade off for a high powered gaming machine. Those machines aren't loud because they opt for higher temps. MSI has that stupid button to force the fans to go max. By not having the fans go max on their own, they're just shortening the life of your machine for you. That's what they want anyway though is for you to go through a machine every 2 years or so.

    No, just no Ethrem.
Nobody should have to suffer through loud fan noise. You shouldnt try to fool them to have to settle with loud fans either by telling people they need to run them to the max. I personally would never buy a piece of hardware that makes my machine loud.
As long as the temperature is below 90 or around 90 with normal fan speed, they shouldnt have to max out the RPM on the fans because the silicon can easily handle that sort of heat.

I'll just let you go on believing that, I'm not in the mood to argue a point that has been argued to death, maybe someone else will chime in this time.

I know the 480 is not the best thing to use as a benchmark for temps and noise but I had the cards since launch, so 4 years now and they top out 90-93 every time you load up a demanding game and they're still perfect after all this time. I know GK104 can't take the heat as well but it shows cards can take that heat over a long period of time.

Now I'm of the mindset that the fan profile in the 17 really sucks. When it sees the card get over 85 it should ramp the fan up to full, I know if it did that It would be able to keep the card stable at that temp but alas it just lets the temp keep creeping and creeping up until its a uncomfortably high. Now I understand this profile is perfect for the causal user and I understand why it comes by default, but for the love of god Alienware let us make are own profiles with a nice fan curve like afterburner in the Alienware command center. With that in place I would be a happy man and so would other users who've been asking for this feature over a year now.

Clevo doesn't have it either to be fair. The fans in our machines never hit their highest point, maybe 70-80% once the temp hits 87C. It doesn't even kick to 100% when our systems hit the thermal shutdown point from my understanding. Not all machines have the option for forced max fans either, I believe the SM series have it which includes mine. With that said, max fans only drops the temps another 2-3C from stock behavior but every bit helps.

As for the temps, high heat might not destroy the core but it will warp the card and eventually can lead to failure to keep the VRMs cool which can lead to failure.

Also the high heat can increase stress on the rest of the components in the machine.

I'm not saying its guaranteed that you will have problems but heat has always been the enemy of computers. I'm not comfortable having my components running that close to their limits.

Wait... so the auto fan profiles never reach maximum RPM? I actually never realised that!

Yeah they opt to be a bit quieter for a few degrees expense. To be honest though, the fans on max are excruciatingly loud so it's understandable.

My Alienware 17 is easily WAY more quiet than my Sager p150sm and my buddies MSI GS60, also, no matter the temp it never hits 100% fan speed.

Seems to be a case of defective by design.

Most of the major gaming machines are made this way though. My M17xR1 only ever hit max fans when it was doing a BIOS update, my Clevo doesn't hit max fans unless I'm doing a BIOS update (its when it flashes the EC I believe) or I force them manually with the FN+1 trick. It seems to be pretty common that fans aren't utilized fully.

Well I have to agree with some of this.
90C shouldnt be a problem to the card but I wouldnt have been comfortable with a notebook running that hot either.

There should be some middle ground. 80s in temp and fan noise but not loud. I usually pick both hardware and brand with certain cooling system based on this.

I also agree with Cammac, we should be able to control the fan speed on our Alienware.
I know I could easily do that with my GT70. I miss that feature.

Yeah I know, mine is the same. But sometimes, I just want the best cooling possible, fan noise be damned. At least give me the choice.
