Which laptop are you looking at?

My choice would be GTX 980 > 970m SLI > 980m if those are the only three options.

But I would avoid SLI as much as possible. Too many issues, best to go with fastest single card you can afford. And if you do go SLI, best to choose dual 980m because if a game doesn't support SLI (more and more common unfortuantely), or has poor implementation/support, you will at least have the 980m to play at best possible frame rate.

Yeah go for 980M SLI, that way you can play most games maxed out even if a game doesn't support SLI.

I'd take a single GTX 980 over the SLI, tbh. GT72S with a 980 would be my route.

The GT80 is basically a desktop computer, so why not build one, at that point?

If really considering the GT80 Titan, have you considered the P870DM from Clevo? A place like Mythlogic or Eurocom which has the Prema BIOS would make things a lot better as well.

If you want SLI, 980M SLI is the bare MINIMUM I'd take (only because 980 SLI is not prevalent yet), and otherwise a single 980 would be better. Especially since it's actually designed to be somewhat decent with overclocking (even though it still needs some Prema magic). The reason is because SLI is *EXTREMELY* dwindling with support. I cannot describe the amount of games, especially big ones, with nice-looking graphics and oodles of UNoptimization, have terrible SLI support in the last two years, and I can expect fully that this will continue in the future. Single 970M when you're faced with an Unreal Engine 4 game or a game that works like poo with SLI is not a good thing.

    - Titanfall took months to get SLI support, and it has light shining/flickering through walls to this day
    - Watch_Dogs took months to get SLI support working well, then a patch broke it all again. Unknown is the current state of its SLI support.
    - Assassin's Creed Unity updated with broken flickering with SLI shortly after launching, and I don't know if it's been patched out (the fix is to delete the intro movies, mind you. But their support is saying the game doesn't support SLI. Think about that for a bit.)
    - Batman Arkham Knight. 'Nuff said.
    - Dying Light took months before patches fixed its performance, and refused to go above 90% util on each card as well. The patches improved performance so much in patches that I literally tripled my minimum framerate and quadrupled my average framerate.
    - Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the last time I played it, refused to go above 70% utilization on each GPU in SLI. OVERCLOCKING the GPUs helped keep the framerate at 60fps when maxed out, but the util% never crossed 70% for more than a second or so.
    - Fallout 4 did not work well with SLI on launch, and I do not know if it still does.
    - Assassin's Creed Syndicate seemed to not pass ~60% util on each card, and sometimes had negative scaling on launch in SLI.
    - Just Cause 3 needed updating for multi-GPU. I am unsure if it has received this.
    - Black Ops 3 has light flickering very often in SLI modes; turning down settings related to shadows and ambient occlusion helps lessen its occurrences but does not eliminate it.
    - Killing Floor 2 has texture glitches (vanishing blocks of textures for split seconds) that happens most often when turning around or turning the camera around in SLI, even with the official SLI bits that they're claiming works fine.
    - Street Fighter V's beta has no SLI support, and is an Unreal Engine 4 game, and thus may not get any support at all in the future depending on the rendering tech chosen.
    - Elite: Dangerous has no official SLI support (seems to work by forcing AFR2 in control panel, but it's still not OFFICIAL, which means any issues you run into will likely get you no help from nVidia or the makers of E :D).
    - GTA V had problems going above 90% util in SLI on launch, and was so CPU-limited that it barely helped until a good few patches rolled out. A distinct difference in performance I noted (with SLI util remaining higher more often) happened, without me changing the driver or settings. It has since broken in performance again, sadly.

I don't remember any more off the top of my head. Now, I don't want to sound like I'm saying you should forget SLI forever and it's not worth it etc etc. I simply want you to be AWARE of the fact that while it does often offer more power; power that one cannot get from a single-GPU system no matter how much they try, but that it is not always viable, and that midranged cards in SLI is now more of a liability than not, if one can get a single stronger card. A single 980 (like from the P870DM I suggested) may very very well be a much better choice, especially if overclocked, and handle games as easily as two 970Ms can.

980M SLI is a different thing, and if you can take it and you are aware of what you're getting into then go ahead, but if you're going to play a lot of AAA titles (especially as soon as they come out) consider that a single GPU may be a much better experience for you.

Personally would opt to get 16GB RAM minimum (2 x 8GB), and at least a 256GB SSD. You can load most games on a hard drive, but Windows OS and frequently used apps and games on the SSD. The overall Windows responsiveness and game load times are substantially improved.

An 250gb m.2 drive would cost you 115$ extra. Depending on what upgrades you choose you can get the Clevo machine for under 2700$

I think with the 980, 6700K and m.2 250gb upgrade you are at exactly 2700$ or at least with the 3% cash discout, im not sure how that works

I agree. :) If $2700 is really a hard limit then opt for the 980m to get you there. Otherwise, go with 980 and opt to add SSD later. But honestly for another $100 or so the improvement with SSD is signficant, and you can get both 980 and SSD and 6700k now for 5% more than your 2700 budget.

We can't choose for you, it's a personal decision.

Why is it that 17" laptops with beastly GPU configurations run 1080p displays? It seems like kind of a waste. Especially since the 3k and 4k displays on gaming laptops are in 14" and 15" models, rubber bg GTX 960M's

    I'm running the 4K panel on my P870DM ;)

The thing with the P870DM right now is, only Eurocom has the 4K panel, so everyone is only offering it with the 1080p option.

Also most people who game will choose the 1080p panel because for gaming, the 1080p panel will be less demanding. 1080P + a GTX 980 (desktop) = perfect gaming.

If you were to choose a 4K panel like me, the 980M SLI would be minimum in my opinion. The GTX 980 (desktop) will struggle @ 4K. 980 (desktop) SLI is perfect for 4K but sadly that is not an option on the P870DM yet.

While I agree that 3K and 4K displays on 13-15" models with lowly 960Ms is a stupid idea, I can't even say that 4K is a great idea for gaming right now, even with two mobile 980s (at the power the MSI GT80 has them at, anyway). Especially if newer titles are the choice. I mean, playing my older titles here, I can play them all at 4K. SSAA Mass Effect 3, Sniper Elite V2, Sleeping Dogs, etc all to 4K. No problems whatsoever. And that's just with my 780Ms.

But you hit Fallout 4, or Just Cause 3, or Arkham Knight, or the upcoming The Divison, any Assassin's Creed game since 3, etc? Not going to run so well at 4K with graphics turned up. Maybe by the time Volta rolls around we'll be ready. I think pascal is going to murder Maxwell for performance, but I can't see 4K maxing out on a single mobile GPU (or even SLI ones; since so many titles that won't use SLI are coming out). Unoptimization is just too rampant T_T.

That being said, there's 17" 4K laptop screens out now, from AUO. But no gsync on them yet (if ever) if you wanted that.

SLI has had a bad time lately and it's probably going to get worse with deferred rendering becoming more popular than ever. Go for the strongest single GPU you can.

They all put in the base memory to save costs. Mainly because it doesn't make any difference for most people. Boutique sellers will let you swap it out for higher spec memory, but the default out of the box will all be 2133mhz for DDR4 SODIMM's and 1600mhz for DDR3 SODIMM's

In this case these are all new DDR4 first releases, so over time the default memory speed might rise up to meet the market, but right now 2133mhz memory is spec for these new chipsets.

Just like 1333mhz memory gave way to 1600mhz for base configs.

You will notice benchmark improvements for memory tests and some benchmarks that rely on memory more heavily than games or normal apps, but for the most part you won't see much of an improvement for the cost of upgrading the memory.

You can buy your GT80S 980 SLI from a boutique seller, and they can swap in some faster memory :)

It's because skylake does not officially support above 2133MHz. Some machines are known to be robust enough to go beyond things, like 2400MHz cl14 that's popular in the P870DMs, but they're considered "out of spec" and likely will be a long time, if at all, before they start offering better RAM (and even then, the RAM will likely need XMP profiles to be turned on to work).

but what is the limiting factor? Sofrware/processor or motherboard?

i dont see any reason for that processor not to be able to run with higher speed ram.

CPU memory specification, it's shown in the CPU spec which you can find on ark.intel.com, for example the i7-6700HQ:
    http://ark.intel.com/products/88967/Intel-Core-i7-6700HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz?q=6700hq

    6700hq memory spec.JPG

So according to spec, 2133mhz is the fastest supported memory for the 6700HQ.

    The same for the i7-6700K:
    http://ark.intel.com/products/88195/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_20-GHz?q=6700K

As with the previous generation Haswell/Broadwell, spec limited to 1600mhz, many would support faster 2133mhz DDR3 memory.

It was a hit or miss gamble, but usually it would work, or at least support 1866mhz or tighter timings at 1600mhz. Sometimes it wouldn't work at all, and only 1600mhz memory would work.

The BIOS can override the settings read from the memory SODIMM, and with control over all the memory timings / settings.

You can often not only support faster memory, you can "overclock" the slower memory to run faster with the same or "looser" timings - slower response timing.

Most laptop BIOS's don't come with memory tunable settings. The best you can do is get the next faster timing memory, and see if works.

I don't know if anyone has tried faster DDR4 memory in the new GT80S's that use DDR4 memory.

I put 2133mhz memory in my GT80 SLI-263 replacing the 1600mhz, memory and it worked great. Memory thoughput went from 17GB/sec to 24GB/sec. Very nice bump in memory throughput performance.

Hopefully enough GT80S's will start shipping and owners will experiment with faster DDR4 memory. :)

The processor *CAN*. It simply is "outside of official specifications". And therefore people are a bit remiss to sell them outside of official spec. But you can likely go above that spec manually... it's just not supported.

Like my 4720HQ only supporting 1600mhz ram, and I have succesfully tested 2133mhz ram.

Yeah, it's been generally noticed that mainstream haswell can handle 2400MHz, unless the IMC of the board is particularly bad. Haswell was later unofficially specced for 1866MHz (and some of the broadwell HQ chips have it as an official spec) but Intel's website never really updated.

Thanks for the heads up, the 070 is a new model variation that is new for Late January.

    MSI GT72S Dominator Pro G Dragon-004
    http://www.xoticpc.com/msi-gt72s-dominatorpro-dragon004-eta-mid-oct-p-8720.html

The differences are minor, but significant.

First, IDK if the new model has the Red Lid, other sites don't have a photo, and Xotic may or may not be using a photo of the 004 as a place holder. So be aware the look might be changing as well.

The storage changes from the 004 to the 070, 2 x 128GB PCIE in the 070 vs 256GB single PCIE in the 004.

The Blu-ray burner gets an upgrade from 6x in the 004 to 8x in the 070.

Otherwise they are the same. Same 32GB memory, same 980 8GB, same 1535/E2400 networking, same 230w power supply, etc.

It's a nice savings in $ for improvements in performance with the storage, with the same capacities.

As far as which to purchase, that's up to you :)

All 3 are great laptops, they will all perform well and give good service with a warranty that you may or may not need.

We can't say which will end up being the best experience because that will vary based on luck of the draw with the parts and the build - and your own expertise in tuning and managing such beasts.

Please let us know what you decide, and how you like it when you get it :)
