So I have heard from some laptop friends that you can turn a GTX 960m into a M2000M, with some Bios/vBios modding, is this true?

Well technically it's possible, but it's not easy anymore. You'd need to put in a lot of work. I'm not sure if it's been done with a 960m.

A lot of work isn't a problem, I am used to tinker a lot with PCs. Hmm, I am going to be a engineer student next year, so it would be much cheaper to buy a GTX laptop and make that into a quadro, a quadro laptop is super expensive, even for the ****ty ones

Eh I don't think your prepared for this kind of work. This is how it was done in the past: http://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/hacking-nvidia-cards-into-their-professional-counterparts/

Can I ask why do you need a quadro?

oh that is very simple, I asked some students that go on the school right now and they said that two of their programs (cannot remember the names) only suported quadro

If you can get the program names ,I can tell you if it's worth it or not. And most programs that are optimized for quadro work just as well on GeForce cards. And will underperform only under very specific scenarios.

Well I know that I am going to use solidworks, Inventor, AutoCAD, tiny bit of cinema 4d and a tiny bit of BIM work

Everything other than Cinema 4D will benefit a little bit from the conversion. And because it's a M2000/960M . The performance jump won't be more than 10%. At most you will be looking at 15% higher fps in heavy scenes.
Heck in 3D MAX / HOUDINI / Maya my GTX1080, Out performs the heck out of the K5200 I have in the workstation at work.

well I am looking for a not crazy expensive laptop that can do those programs without any big problems.
I am glad to hear that a quadro wont give me much of a boost.

Higher end quadro do help a LOT with those programs. But no the low end ones.
End of the day you will need to decide if the hassle is worth the effort or not.
Usually the performance gains are noticeable with the likes of M4000 and up.

A M4000M laptop cost way too much for me. I live in Denmark so you can basically add 25-30% to the american price and you will have what such a laptop would cost here. I guess that I should just find a laptop with a powerful quad core (like a 6820HQ/HK or better) I think that would be a better option and then just don't care much about the dGPU

You'll be fine with most of them with a GeForce GPU... A GTX 1070 should be good enough to deal with all of them!

Yeah a 1070 would be great, but those laptops cost close to 3k here in Denmark, so no thanks xD
A new 970m laptop cost 1.4k, so yeah. I am just going to look used or hope for a great black friday deal.

Should be able to get one for 2k.. Look at an EU reseller and just get it from them.. Try CEG, PC Specialist, Obsidan - PC...

Damn that's steep. At that point yeah a beefier CPU will be more useful. But viewport performance might tank in heavy scenes.

yep, pricing in Denmark is insane.

2k, is still too much. 1.4k is my max right now and then I also need the nordic layout..
I am just going to look used :D
