    Hey guys/gals,

I'm not a hardcore gamer, so I'm a bit out of the loop on whats out there lately.
The last 'shooter' game I spent a decent amount of time playing online was Soldier of Fortune, and I really liked it.
So I was wondering if I could get suggestions for what to get these days, with the following requirements:

    - similar game to SOF
    - will work well with a video card such as the ATI 1100 dedicated
    - Doesn't need to be the newest game out there, but still popular enough that lots of people are still playing online.
    - I was able to play SOF using just the keypad and mousepad, pretty good actually.. :) So would like to be able to do that again, not interested in using a game controller/pad.

    Thanks!!!!

Is counter strike a stand-alone software that you purchase and install, and then log onto someone's server to play? Or is it only online? Do you have to pay to play? I went to the cs website, and all it seems to talk about is hosting, fee's, etc. I couldn't even find any info about how to get the game itself..

Counter-Strike is only online. You need to use the Steam client to run it. Aside from the cost of the game you don't need to pay anything to play. Some servers allow you to pay money to be an admin or get a reserved spot on the server.

    BOOOOOurns for Counterstrike.

I would suggest either F.E.A.R or maybe even Battlefield 2/2142.

    ^ Ditto.

BF2/BF2142 and F.E.A.R. are insanly fun! F.E.A.R. can be played as a single player game or online and im pretty sure its free to play online. BF 2142 is online only and free. BF 2 is both single player and online and it is also free to play online.

You'll be able to play at low settings, but there will be some chugging. BF2 is one of those games that requires a lot of RAM to run very well, in conjunction with a pretty good video card.

In my opinion, go get a Steam account and get Counterstrike: Source, Counterstrike 1.6, and Half-Life 2. They'll play great on the ATI X1100.

With your setup i'd say you would find CS:S most enjoyable.

    Try Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory..!

It's a WWII FPS based on the war in Europe (germany vs USA), it's free, and it's entirely multiplayer. It's really a fun game and has elements of MMO's because as you play you upgrade rank, skills, EXP, etc.

The game also runs just fine on my junky Dell Dimension 2400 with Intel GMA integrated graphics from 3 years ago :) (The game's graphics aren't half bad though, they are about the same with Counter strike IMHO.)

edit: oh yea and it's currently #5 on Xfire's list most popular FPS games.

Red Faction, but avoid Red Faction II.

Red Faction is the best first person shooter ever.

Quake II is the runner up.
