There are very many well-known websites.
Just to name a few...

don't forget gamespot.com , they're pretty good.

I like to use metacritic, as it averages out many different media outlets
(Print magazines too!) - as an added bonus it also collates film and music reviews!
EDIT: It's a good jumping-off point to find good gaming websites. -
gamespot.com , ign.com
-
www.gamerankings.com gives you a good average score. I prefer it to metacritic. www.eurogamer.net have entertaining and well written reviews.
-
I'd also recommend gamespot.com.
-
I usually check out Gamespot.com and Ign.com. Gamespot's review sometimes are a bit harsh so you may want to look at a few reviews before drawing conclusions for a game. Recently I found out that the review section of Driver Heaven is actually pretty good as well.
-
Gamespot is ok, they're a bit biased toward consoles though, so I usually depend on PC Gamer for PC games.. Game rankings is the place I go for summaries of the overall ranking of a game.

yeah, gamespot.com.

I have tried many review sites, and Gamespot has been the best for me so far. Some of their reviews are slightly biased, but a vast majority, especially those reviewed by Greg Kasavin who now sadly works for EA, are very accurate.
Do remember that most of the major review websites like IGN or Gamespot have a +2 to 3 point skew in their ratings. However, as you have stated, you are after good informative reviews as opposed to ratings, so these sites should serve you well. -

i wonder if some game review sites get paid to give a certain rating, because sometimes the bad isn't that bad and they just knock the rating way down
-
Just have to say gamespot.com
-
I vote for http://www.gamespot.com

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I really like the aggregate sites (metacritics, gamerankings, etc.).
I've typically used gamespot and ign, but I figured it was bad to get dependent on one or two for too long (especially as gamespot's connection to cnet makes me a bit wary of the objectivity and reliability of their reviews - but so far I haven't really noticed a loss of quality).
Thanks for the suggestions! -

I used to use read reviews at both IGN and Gamespot to decide which game to buy. But latley it seems to me that IGN has gone downhill, I hate the new layout. I think that ever since Murdoch reached out his claw and snatched IGN the website has been biased (Fox News anyone). The only real advantage to IGN is the fact that they post reviews quicker than some other sites but I feel gamespot is the least biased.

P.S: Our website no longer exists... One of the unfortunate consequences of not getting free games regularly. -
Ah well.
