FPS... HANDS down, if you had to choose ONE fps... Call of Duty 4. It has a great single player (short tho) and amazing multiplayer. Crysis and bioshock are great single player fun too
RTS... I used to play C&C generals.. then went to CoD4 for a while... BUT, i found a game SUPREME Commander: Forged Alliance. Theres actually two. Forged Alliance is the standalone expansion. I never got the first one. Its got amazing graphics. You have to be smart, LOTS of multitasking and good campaign. Playing the AI is actually fun in this game too... usually its not...
P.S. wen you zoom in on the 500 unites... 4850 may not be enuf.. AND added bonues, this game takes advantage of ALL 4 cores during game play, a rarity. I have a dual core, just fine tho anyway. Happy gaming.

I must go with Call of Duty 4, as well. It's such a well-polished FPS, you really can't go wrong.
-
there are so many game recommendation threads already lol.
anyways try Call of Duty 4, World in Conflict, WoW or EQ 2. that or go to www.gamershell.com and download bunch of demos and see what you like. -
wud u recommend cod4 over counterstrike?
supreme commanded looks sooooooo good LOL. ur rite the gfx aamazing...
-
I'd recommend the orange box if you don't already have it.
you get 2 great FPS's, HL2 and TF2, aswell as portal all for the price of one game. -
FPS: Call of Duty 4
RTS: either Company of Heroes or World in Conflict
All of those are awesome! -
Company of heroes is another RTS game that ALOT of people i know have. I may be getting it soon myself. Meanwhile, I've only been talking about RTS when I mostly Play CoD4 in a league. THats my game of choice. -

Halo and Halo 2 are the little brothers to good FPS. (Over-hyped, washed up games)
FPS- Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, or Crysis. Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock for the incredible story, Crysis for a good story, good gameplay, and stunning visuals.
RTS- I enjoyed World in Conflict, Starcraft II is on it's way, and C&C 3 was great.
Free RPG- Guild Wars is pretty weak, in my opinion. You would be better off just buying Oblivion. -

Just my 2 cents:
Halo series = Good, but like KGann said, "Over-hyped, washed up games". They are good FPS for a CONSOLE (think X-Box and X-Box 360), because most of your friends prolly know how to play it if they visit your house/dorm. I wouldn't bother to play it online (I've done LAN, though).
I haven't played COD4, but I've been wanting to try this FPS for a while now.
BioShock. I played this FPS on the X-Box 360 and it rocked! The storyline/graphics are excelent. I imagine it would be even better on the PC (I'm a PC-Gamer by preference).
Crysis. Haven't tried this FPS, but have been dying too. It's more of an eye-candy game, though. If you're GPU can handle it, then go for it!
Orange Box (Half-Life, Counter-Strike, TF2, etc). I've been playing these games since BEFORE "Steam" (the application that you now run these games through). They are great, but are out-dated in a sense. Still, they hold true good clean/tactical/fps fun. No true FPS gamer has not played these games AND enjoyed them, lol. Unless you are into more Gory games, then think Doom, Unreal Tournament, etc. I must also add (many people neglect to mention this). That, when you get Half-Life 1 you gain access to a bunch of FREE games, such as Natural Selection, Day of Defeat, Zombie Panic, Earths Special Forces, etc. Repeat, FREE! And in my opinnion Natural Selection (it is half-fps & half-rts, both parts are amazing, a MUST play) and Day of Defeat (strictly FPS), are BETTER than any of the pay-2-play valve/steam games. Honestly. I've played in a ton of clan-matches (some for prizes/$) in DOD. There is also Half-Life 2, which will gain you access to more cool FREE games, such as The Hidden. FYI: In case you were curious Earth's Special Forces is a dragon ball z based games. Where Zombie Panic is basically a gory zombie v humans (if you die, you respawn as a zombie to fight ur previous team, lol). The Hidden is basically everyone vs 1 super-guy. He isn't actually very "super". He is just 99.99% invisible to the naked eye (Think "Predator" the movie, where it is a predator vs Arnold Schwarzennegger and his team of commandoes in the jungle). You'll be in a constant attentitive/adrenaline state while playing that game, because if you blink, you really are dead, lol.
Supreme Commander. Again, haven't tried this RTS myself. I've heard lots of good things about it, however, and have been wanting too play it.
Civilization IV/Alpha Centauri. A bit old, but VERY good RTS games. A must try. I don't find them to be good at online play, however. Also to note, they are NOT real-time (they're turn-based), not that that is a bad thing at all.
Starcraft/Starcraft2. You'd be insane to have NOT played the original (and it's expansion set Brood Wars). I started that game TWO WEEKS after the original came out. If you've ever heard of clan Rahl, that was my clan in the original/brood games. We were fairly strong/large for a while. Anyhow, the games wrong. I don't know how good SC2 is, but like every other SC lover, I'm about ready to piss my pants for its arrival, I'm just so damn hyped for it!
World of Warcraft, Guild Wars. I hated these games. I mention this only so you have an idea for my sense of "tastes" in games, so you can make a better judgement if you like my gaming opinnions or not. Most people loved these games, I hated them. Same goes for Vampire the Masquerade and other such games.
Alright, that is all for now.
Happy Gibbing! -

Sorry, double posted.

My favourite online shooter is TF2 which far surpasses CoD4 just in my opinion, its just more fun and far more realistic
RTS I have played Company of Heroes and Sins of a Solar Empire and both are excellent.
Online, Guildwars was very good but since I found TF2 I dont think I will ever play MMORPGs again just online shooters (gotta get a clan for it to be fun in both genres)
just my humble opinion
EDIT: I though I might just add that if you get the Orange Box, for a little bit more cash you can buy Garry's Mod, which is very unique and very fun! read it up -
Did you just say TF2 is more realistic than CoD4?
Seriously. Did you just say that? -
Pfft. Oblivion, I thought it was really cool untill I realized with every level I gained, EVERYONE gained a level. That in itself is game breaking for me. It makes it the same challenge the whole game through.. what's the point of leveling up?
Neverwinter Nights 2 is a really fun game, and MUCH more playable now that they have patched most of the bugs. -
Aside from the quote.
If your a competative player, go for CS 1.6/CS:S since the competitive base and all the leagues out there are just incredible. As far as an RPG goes, try out Oblivion. The best RTS which is as much fun to watch than to play, the one and only, Barbie: Horse Rid..... Starcraft Original and it's expansion, Brood War. Best RTS EVER. -
FPS:
Orange Box: As listed you get 3 (counting HL series as 1) great games for the price of one
Vegas 2: Great if you enjoy a 3rd person/1st person blend
Bioshock: A great FPS with RPG elements. Demo is available on Steam.
STALKER: Not a graphical powerhouse, but the evolving environment makes it really fun. Borders on the edge of a horror shooter at times.
RPG:
Mass Effect: I enjoyed the story and IMO offered a more interactive combat than most other RPGs
The Witcher: I'm waiting for the new version to come out. Supposedly has much more added content.
Oblivion: A great sandbox game.
PUZZLE QUEST: To my horror I've logged more time in this game than all other games combined in the past two weeks. Addicting gameplay.
IMO there has been a shortage of great PC RPGs in the recent years so look backwards in time for some gems: Baldur's Gate Series, Fallout, Planescape, etc
RTS:
Company of Heroes: Less emphasis on economy as capped points yield resources. Great physics. I enjoyed this game a lot.
Dawn of War: Great if you're into the Warhammer 40k Universe, more emphasis on combat as you need to capture points to gain resources. Dawn of War 2 has been confirmed to use the same engine as CoH (someone confirm?)
Starcraft: A friend just got me back into this game. Pros get 300+ Actions per minute (insane!) -
Here are my recommendations which don't really differ much from whats been already mentioned because they're all great so take your pick.
FPS - COD4 - just a great intense game, SP is a little short but its quality and you got a great MP portion too. Top notch graphics and runs well.
Crysis - Graphics don't need no mentioning, then you have the physics - destructible environments, gameplay has a lot of replayability you can choose to attack however you like, whatever way, its totally up to you from guns blazing to taking the stealth route. Its brilliant.
Bioshock - Immersive game world to explore with good story; the activation limits have also been removed recently.
For multiplayer TF2 definitely, get it with the Orange Box. Great endless fun with success built on teamwork and a more relaxed game.
RTS -COH, Supreme Commander - A lot of building will be done, but you got massive amounts of units from land, air and naval, then you also have the experimental units which are devastating, its all out war.
Any Category - RPG - Mass Effect, Just got this and I'm already loving it, an action rpg which has shooting, turning into a classic for me.
Note it has only three activations and then you have to contact EA and see if they give you another one. I hope they remove this later on as I have used up two already, and if you upgrade parts or reinstall windows I believe it uses up an activation and unlike Bioshock you don't get them back if you uninstall the game. Thats the only fault for me. -
FPS - Like everyone else CoD4 and Bioshock are some best most recent games.
RTS - I only really play old rts now like Rise of nations and AOE2been meaning to try Company of heroes
RPG - I don't like rpgs the only one that I really really liked was Fable the lost chapters. I thought that was amazing. It should run on anything right now. I guess its not completely a rpg -
Company Of Heroes for the RTS.
-
when is battlefield bad company coming out for pc dammit!! i have it for ps3, AWESOMENESS!!! but i want to play it with the mouse/keyboard combo! that would be great.
-
It's not. That simple.
-
More importantly, you would be willing to fork money over to EA for the same game TWICE?
Game recommendations.
