I have been having this problem with my laptop for a year now:
I could really use a solution, please help.

Problem: Whenever I am playing games (listed below) there is a very noticeable crackling sound, almost like static, it is only during gameplay and is always going on but not in any sort of pattern.

What I have tried: I have tried to adjust settings in the games (however this probably won't help considering it is across all games), I have tried to go to the sound options from my computer and changed some stuff. This didn't help, the problem is that I do not know what to change.

Could this be a driver problem? I'm really almost giving up on my laptop. I would be so happy if someone could smooth this out for me.

My specs are in my sig.

Whenever I am playing these games:

Bioshock, Half-life 2, Command and Conquer 3, Rise of Legends, F.E.A.R
To be honest, almost every game I play!

Have you tried flat-out uninstalling your sound drivers and lettings Windows Update reinstall them after a reboot? That MIGHT work.

The static part makes me think there is some sort of serious interference going on somewherein there...no loose metal in the headphone jack, right?

    nope nothing loose.

Also, when I plug in headphones or external speakers the same thing happens.

The sound is more like a:

    Crackle
    Static
    Popping

Maybe I missed it but is the sound you are hearing coming from the notebook speakers, a external set of speakers or a headphone?

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the sound driver?

Sounds like its an analog problem, hence me asking about your use of an external device to listen.

    All of the above!

The sound pops/crackles when I use the laptop speakers or the headphones or external speakers!

I am about to try to uninstall and reinstall drivers for sound.

Could someone tell me how to do this, briefly I think I know how but could use a review!

I had a problem similar to this but only while I was playing WOW. I tried adjusting everything in the sound option and nothing got rid of it besides just muting the game. After doing some research on the web some people claimed that when Vertical Sync was turned off the crackles went away. I was skeptical but it worked for me so I would try that if you haven't already. Oh yeah and can anyone explain why a video option would fix a sound problem?

Run dxdiag.exe from the start menu search
Go to the audio tab and try reducing "hardware acceleration" to "none"

    might help.

Under dxdiag there is no option for hardware acceleration under the sound tab. Nothing I can alter

Update the sound driver from realtek, that solved it for me. The sound usually got messed up when the cpu was working the hardest.

Could you give me the link to the page where I can download these drivers?

Also, which one should I download?

    Thanks
