Hey all, looking for all of your opinions here. Of the games above (most of which are fairly recent), which would you say has the best story? Notice that there is no "other" option, because I really just want everyone to focus on the games I listed since I'm thinking of getting just one of them. Of the listed, I'm tempted to say Bioshock (from what I've heard). But HL2 (not listed) really does take the cake for the best story I've ever played :D

I haven't played them all but of the ones I've played through I say World in Conflict.

From the above, Bioshock has the most captivating and inovating story. However, I never finished the game, got me bored out of my skull....

You want a story? get the Prince of Persia series...of Legacy of Kain series...or Max Payne... they`re older but far better in storyline than all of the above, IMHO...

Yah, Bioshock all the way...the first FPS where I actually had to look up elements of the story online to get some explanations that I missed in the actual game itself.

I voted Stalker, it had some pretty deep background, and was based on a real life event. Also, they modeled a lot of the area from visits they took to Chernobyl. A very close 2nd though would be the Witcher, amazing story, ton of characters and interactions. The way Geralt narrated about things in the game reminded me of Max Payne.

Witcher for me. A world as grim as our own with a protagonist whose story changes depending on how you play the game from start to finish.

no, i was just hoping people would focus on games that i'm thinking of getting. but now that i think about it, i probably should've added an "other" option after all...

and everyone, the reason HL2 isn't on the list is because i already have it :D

Some people here seem to be confused between story and gameplay. I have no idea how Call of Duty could even get one vote. If it were a movie, it'd be mindless Hollywood-esque Jerry Bruckheimer drivel.

Both the Bioshock and The Witcher would take the cake, I think, but I chose The Witcher.

Usually all RPG or RPG-like games are associated with good story, or at least on average a better story than games of other genres.

I haven't played them all, but out of all the ones I played (Crysis, Bioshock, UT3, R6V, Witcher, Gears) all were pretty bad... Gears had a really engaging storyline, but ending was crap. Bioshock's story was just all over the place, I don't know why it got as many votes as it did.

Because it takes place in a city under the sea with evil little girls that steal life force from dead guys, and huge guardians in giant metal suits.

And you get to pwn guys with a lightning+monkey wrench combo.

Did I mention it took place under the sea?

I still need to finish that game actually. :|

Of the games up there Bioshock obviously sticks out (tho I never played Witcher)...

personally System Shock 2 is my all time fave with the Wing commander series coming in a close second.

World in Conflict, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Bioshock will be my guess.

But if you want something else try Fahrenheit!

    My vote is for Bioshock.

Although I have not played all of those games I have played most and Bioshock not only has a compelling story but a good setting to fully pull you in.

I hate to tell you this but indigo prophecy was never finished, Quantic Dream ran out of time/money and had to rush the game out. Its still a good game but the later elements are definitely rushed compared to the beginning giving the whole game a slightly unfinished feel.

heavy rain is looking to be good tho.

I haven't played any of the games on your poll, but i think everyone here is missing the adventure games: Dreamfall The longest Journey(the best game ever IMHO). The story is just impressive and very very sad. Also, there is the original TLJ, Syberia 1&2, and of course, the dad of all rpgs, SW:KOTOR

There are a lot of old games also that have great stories :)

Witcher was my fav from that list though. CoD4/Bioshock/The Witcher if I could vote for all three.

The Witcher gets my vote. Except for BioShoc, I never really find FPS games that seem like any time was spent on the story at all. The Witcher, however has to be the best on that list. I'm really enjoying it right now and really like the absence of good vs evil in the storyline. Very refreshing.

But I had to vote Bioshock for PC.

While I still think Half-Life 2 is woefully overrated in almost every aspect (note: I do NOT think it's a bad game, I enjoy it fine, I just don't think it's the doorbuster everyone says it is), I will say that I'm really curious as to why Portal is absent from this list and why no one's mentioned it yet.

If brief, Portal still has a pretty amusing story, and it's fleshed out well as you move along in the game. That, and GLaDOS is probably the best-written character to emerge out of the last year of games. So what's going on? Why no love for Portal?

For what it's worth I did vote Bioshock (I have a really hard time arguing against it), but Portal for me would be a perilously close second.
