Currently I have an Nvidia 6800 in my desktop.

If I bought a laptop with an Nvidia 8400GS, would I have similar performance?

    How about with an 8600?

I want portability but need to game a little.

8600 is fine, easily better than 6800

not that big of an improvement actually, 8600M GT(laptop version) is quite a bit slower than the desktop variant. I owned a desktop 6800 and now have a desktop 8600GT.

Wait, what? Are you sure the 8400M is worse than the desktop 6800? I would think that the 8400M is on par with a 7400 desktop.

it might be. lets say an 8400m has the horsepower of the a desktop 7400 card.

the 7400 isn't as strong as the 6800.

    logic: 1 / antilogic: 0

desktop 6800 performs slightly worse than a desktop 7600GT.

There is no desktop 7400. That's exclusively a laptop card. The closest one is either one of the stronger 7300 (not gt) or 7500 LS (which is likely very weak).
