I wouldnt trust a site I've never heard of, Digital download is already a tough sell from steam, but an untrusted source, no thankyou.

Its actually very trustable site for me. I have bought dozens of games from them over the past years and no problems so far.

you may not know about them, but that doesn't mean they are illegitimate. gamersgate is a legit operation and they have partnerships with some major publishers.

kudos for staying sharp though. good thought process in general.

I know GamersGate is a legit company but I am still unsure whether they will perish sometime in the future. I know Valve isn't going anywhere so I can safely buy games from Steam. Unless GamersGate has no its own DRM.

I know some people consider Steam as DRM, but you can play games in offline mode. So it's only DRM for when you want to download games. Well of course you have to be online if you want to play multiplayer :D

Steam isn't "considered" DRM; it is DRM.

Does GamersGate even have a client, or does it basically give downloadable retail copies? The latter means that the games only use the DRM put in by the publisher.

Most games on steam will allow you to put an icon on your desktop anyways, most times all steam really does is organize the game files under steam directory, and Ive already transfered all the files onto its on HDD in my raid. So using that logic if you'd copy paster the steam folder you couid back up all copies of your games to a portable hard drive and store it away. Very few games require steam on to run, atleast the ones I bought, and even some of their games don't require steam like L4D, just make a shortcut from the directory.

That said im newer to pc gaming scene these days, its been about 10 years since I really played pc heavy, so for anything that I don't see heavy advertising for I feel a little leary about. Like Gamersgate, the website looks shoe makered and very back door websitish, were as steam and direct to drive are bigger names. Even good old games has a bigger name. Anyways really Steam is good enough for me, and christmas sale from them is enough for me. It deters me enough to do steal the games off the net.

Gamersgate just gives the downloadable version of the retail game so you don't have to worry about DRM related problems.

seems to me that there is still drm associated with many of these titles. i clicked on a few i was interested in and there is a category in the product details titled drm. a few i was interested in listed securom as the drm. so sick of seeing that associated with about every game i want to play.
