I am looking for games that I can play at maximum settings in my system, to fully enjoy graphics and effects. I want to see what my laptop is capable of...

    I am looking for:

    1) FPS / 3rd person action games

    2) racing games

    thanks in advance.

I don't really know many racing games, but some games that you could play at high settings that I really enjoy are:
    Counter-Strike:Source
    Half-Life 2
    Team Fortress 2
    Oblivion
    Audiosurf

    Hope this helps! :)

Didn't you have a thread like this before? Was that you? Anyways... Games you can max out.

    Dead Space
    Lego Batman
    Orange Box
    CoD 2
    Quake 4
    Doom 3
    Far Cry
    Splinter Cell 1-3

You might have to lower the resolution on some of these but I would think you could probably max most if not all of them out.

I find that fairly hard to believe with AC and Bioshock. I have AC on my XPS right now and I am running it at 1280x800 with Shadows 2/3, and others at 3/4 or less. Sometimes I can definitely feel the slowdown especially traveling between cities. But no way do I average 30-40 FPS at all times.

Everything on AC is maxed except shadows 2/3 and AA 2/3 (resolution at 1280x800). I didn't notice a huge difference with them on, so I just left them off for a boost. I use Rivatuner to track my FPS, and it stays above 30 in the cities, but during the SPOILER present time END SPOILER the FPS takes a hit for some reason. At 1680x1050 (same settings sans AA) I struggle to stay above 20, with shadows really dropping the FPS. I suppose SPOILER at the end when the game just throws waves of enemies at you END SPOILER the FPS may drop a bit. Also, my GPU is clocked ~25% over stock while playing AC.

Bioshock runs really well, I was actually playing at 1680x1050 for a while (at 17-23 FPS average though). The newer drivers (179.xx and 180.xx really make a difference, adding 10-15% FPS increase). When VSync is on at 1280x800 I never drop below 30 FPS (using clocks of 580/1200/465), but at stock clocks it sticks at 20 FPS. Without VSync and OC'd, the game goes from 35-40 FPS in most areas and hits 45 when there's not much going on.

you can max out need for speed games...
do not max out GRID, or, max it out, but lower the AA, since it takes hellahit on performance...

Bioshock i ran it maxed out on dx10
avg fps = 25, 18-ish on crowded enemy areas
    but , 1280x800 native u .u''

oh and deadspace = maxed out, pretty smoooth gameplay :D

pretty much every game prior to 2007.

maxing out games doent mean much when some settings can be lowered to improve performance without impacting visuals..I can't play crysis on all high, but I can have better visuals than high and better framerates than medium with configs..but honestly your card is good enough for near maximum IQ on all games, and wll continue as long as ps3 games are made, after that your might need to upgrade your card to get the next generation level of IQ.

to me crysis is near photo realistic, and the 8600m gt is able to handle extremely high polygon counts beyond enthusiast levels, but performance is impacted on the card ability to process all the information when it comes to explosions and post processing effects.

personally i play all my games maxed but I dont average 30-40 ..its usually 15-25 fps.

    games you should buy:

    fallout 3
    crysis warhead (use configs)
    half life 2 (all versions)
    bioshock
    grid
    gta series (use enb series)
    splinter cell (all versions)
    dead space
    mass effect
farcry2( although i dont enjoy the game yet, offers great IQ/performance ratio at all low settings)

thats pretty much it, but honestly dude if you can run crysis all medium you will be fine with most games maxed

    thanks everyone for the input...

I think I will begin with Biochock... maybe Crysis when I'm done with it...

I see there are not many racing games fan in this forum...

No... I started a "game recommendation thread" once, but it sleeps with the fish now...

GTA San Andreas takes a massive performance hit with the ENB series mod even on a desktop 8800GT.

Since no one suggested racing games, I'll suggest some, but they're on the basis that your 8600 is a GDDR3:

    1. Test Drive Unlimited: 1440X900, 4xAA, High Details, No HDR - 20-25 FPS
    2. Need For Speed Most Wanted/Carbon: 1440X900, Everything High, 4xAA - 25-30 FPS
    3. All NFS games before Most Wanted: Max
