Two related questions:
1- Where can I download some free games for a ten year old girl? I know there are tons of sites with flash applets that make silly games but I wanted something to download so that my nieces could play without connecting to the Internet. The 'silly' games I saw them play are usually "dress the doll" or "make the meal" kind of game.
2- Can you suggest some good educational games for 10 year old human material? Something that can stimulate the brain. Not necessarily free, I can gladly pay for this sort of games/software.

Shadowfate Wala pa rin ako maisip e.
Some old abandonware games like Putt-putt Freddi fish and story books.
Math Blaster and such. -
Maybe one of the older "The Sims" games. They don't have all the innuendo that the newer ones do. My niece when she was 11 and 12 played one of the older ones all the time.

There are a lot of educational games.
I remember I spent hours and hours playing this detective game. An evil genius created robots to make havoc in a school. You ran around reading notes and whenever you saw a mysterious robot you'd take a picture. You would have to piece together the clues to solve who the culprit was. To solve, you would have use math and other testing methods used by standardized testing in the letters etc.
Forgot what it was called, but games like that are awesome for young kids I think. I loved it. -

Yep Ziddy, that's more likely the kind of game I am looking for. Something that can be fun but forces the young minds to burn carbohydrates. The reason I'm asking here is that it is not easy to judge a book... er, an educational game by the cover, and that - being too old to 'feel' the adequate level of 'coolness' of a game for a 10 year old, I have to rely on real users' opinions. Either kids or their relatives.
I found a few sites listing educational software and games but it's hard to tell the good ones from the - let's say - less good ones. -
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego was a huge favorite of mine when I was younger.

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Let her play CS:S. My little cousins started playing when they were around the same age. CS:S is good for precise hand-eye coordination, reflexes, strategy, and teamwork (to a certain extent).
-
lol, did you suggest CS:S (counter strike source)? you'd have to have the profanity filter on full blast dude. plus he said not online, so that's out.
I loved Oregon Trail when I was a kid, remember playing that in school as part of a "history" lesson. There are lots of typing games out there, I think that's a great thing to get kids to play, it's a great skill to learn.
This seems like a decent website, though I've never used it or known anyone to use it myself, just came up from a quick google search:

I didn't say anything about playing CS:S online. I was implying fully about playing CS:S in offline mode with the bots, hence following suit with the "not online" moniker in the thread title.
-
Scrabble, Bookworm adventures - might help expand her vocabulary
Escape from Monkey Island, The Longest Journey(NOT dreamfall) - adventure/quest games. You pick up all kinds of items and need to figure out how to use them
World of Goo? -
CS.S would be a good choice... it does help with coordination and reflexes in a way but u have the addicting problem...also u really kill the game when playing against bots... there's way more learning in a way when playing online realtime against other ppl... no exactly an educational games but it does help...

It's better for them to play FPS than MMO anyway.
My satirical view. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5009586&postcount=43 -
Shooting another player doesn't seem to me a very good thing to teach a child on how to interact with other players. One of the reasons I don't care for online FPS anymore. -
^I agree with Ziddy.

I played CS when I was 10-ish/11/12 and I turned out fine. *twitch*
Plants vs Zombies? Popcap makes some educational games that are fun. -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
CSS... serious? Clearly you people are not parents, lol. Because the first thing that pops into my mind when I think edu-games for tween girls is hardcore FPS with lots of guns & terrorists! Boy I hope none of you are thinking about going into teaching or child care.
How about Crayon Physics? This one will definitely encourage you to get invloved too.

And those cooking or farm games are hardly educational but might require some time management type thinking. So if those are the kinds of things you think they'd play...

And finaly some quality sleuthing with Nancy Drew.

Hope those help.
Edit:
Oh I'd also like to point you to a good website for gamer parents. Remember like everything with kids it is really important to get involved. You will both learn and enjoy so much more that way.

Hmm i remember this game from a friends brother it involved solving math and reading/writing skills and once you've done those get a completely irrelevant game XD but yeh he's addicted and learnt alot so if there on any advancements on that or maybe just manually find a game they like and limit there time on it 20 minutes of work 20 (more or less depends) minutes of play ect EDIT: also thinking about it maybe try Crazy Machines 2 or puzzle pirates (is an MMORPG) the first is challenging but depending on how smart the child in question is it could be stressful or fun XD and the second is an MMO yet is based around different puzzles ranking in crews ect VERY child friendly with filters ect, Eufloria i would recommend calming and teaches basic management skills also +for world of goo
