Are there any games like Final Fantasy (for PC)? Not necessarily in terms of game play, but in terms of the addictiveness of the story line.

Uh, the PC versions of 7 and 8? lol
-
Addictiveness of the story line?
- You can play Deus EX (old game, old graphics, maybe the first FPS with RPG imbued, excellent story).
- Knights of the Old Republic (Star Wars), very good story and plus if you are Star Wars fan.
- Diablo II (well told story, addictive gameplay) -
hm, diablo II does have a good story, but just repetive after awhile, great game for awhile though, the multiplayer is still good too.
-
hmm well i love the FF7 one for pc cause you can get the charecter mod to where the characters arent all all blocky and are all big headed

have fun -
you could get a certain thing off the internet and play chrono trigger/cross.
if your looking for a good story the witcher is good although its nothing like final fantasy. deus x and KOTOR are not either.
basically you won't get anything like final fantasy unless your playing another japanese RPG -

I've played Chrono Trigger on my playstation, and also FF7 and FF8 for PC... I've also played D2 for 3 or 4 years... All of them are great games!
Not a big fan of Star Wars. How's Neverwinter Nights compared to FF games? How is NWN compared to Oblivion? -
I like the KoToR (Knights of the Old Republic) 1&2 suggestions.
I am a Square fan, between my siblings, we own all Final Fantasy console games (FFI-FFX, FFXII), as well as FFXI Online (which my siblings play).
I also recommend Elder Scrolls: Oblivion if you havent tried it yet. It is highly addictive. -
NWN1 is not really party-based since the 2nd and final official expansion has a party limit of 3 characters including your own character, it's still a good game in its own right but difficult to compare to Final Fantasy.
Oblivion is almost purely single player, biggest draw for that is the eyecandy and the huge world and freedom to explore it. -
You could always pick up a final fantasy or two and play them via an emulator.
-
Addictiveness? Humm, yeah, I suppose watching the Windows desktop might be able to compete...
Seriously, what's so addictive about watching a 3-minute cutscene every time you perform an attack?
I wouldn't call Oblivion addictive either. An impressive sandbox, but too little story and too little direction to the game to be *addictive*.
Of RPG's I've personally found engaging, the main ones I can remember are:
Fallout 1 & 2
Knights of the old republic 1 & 2
Deus Ex (Well, it was sorta RPG'ish... A bit, anyway)
Try it anyway. The games are just plain fun on their own merits, not because they're Star Wars. And of course, it doesn't take place in the "standard" Star Wars timeline, which also helps make it feel different. -
For story i like:
fallout 1
fallout 2
fallout BoS
arcanum of steamworks
baldur's gate 1 + exp
baldur's gate 2 + exp
icewind dale + exps
planetscape torment
diablo 1 + exp
diablo 2 + exp
deus ex 1
deus ex IW
All the thief games
elder scrolls daggerfall
morrowind
system shock 1
system shock 2
half life
kotor 1
kotor 2
etc... etc... -

I didn't like Morrowind when I played it because there's way too much to do, which is what makes me think that I won't like Oblivion much more either.
I have all the PS1 FF games, and I've played all of them on my PS as well as on my laptop w/ ePSX emulator. Are there any 100% functional PS2 emulators? Will they be able to run all FF games for PS2? -
Try The Witcher is'not like ff but it has an amazing story and every character seems real, very expressive all immerse in a dark world full of atmosphere...
Best RPG of the year
-
Xenogear (but not Xenosaga). About FF, I think FF X and FF XII storylines are not as good as the old FFs
-
It depends what attacks you use. And unless you've played one of them for more than a good few hours you wouldn't have any of the 3-minute-cutscene attacks anyway
As for suggestions - the only thing that springs to my mind is the Breath of Fire series, if they're on the PC. But I haven't followed RPG's for a while now. -
The good of FF isn't the attack system but the exploration system and the storytelling that isn't second to anyone...
-
What do you mean by the exploration system?
I totally agree that the way they tell the story is excellent (like FFVI, FFVII, FF Tactics). -
No, it's not second to anyone. it's absolute rock bottom. Predictable stories about emo teenagers with spiky hair. Stories that have to break the game's own rules for anything to happen. (Like when whatshername died in FF7. You've been shot at and stabbed and everything by a variety of monsters, elite soldiers and whatnot. You've been hit by meteors, lightning and all sorts of supernatural phenomena. And yet, when The Bad Guy stabs your sweetheart, it's special, and she just dies.
No, sorry to break it to you, but that is not good storytelling. It's inconsistent and silly.
As for the exploration system? You mean the strictly linear one with no actual exploration, and random encounters everywhere you go?
Seriously, if you want exploration, play Oblivion, or perhaps Fallout (Fallout also has most games beat on storytelling). -
Yeah but Oblivion gets a bit repetitive. Get a quest, find the dungeon, kill everything in said dungeon, collect reward. Wash rinse and repeat. And it's also not like they make the dungeons any different then each other. The only plot or missions I found even remotely compelling in Oblivion was the Knights of the Nine. And what did I get when I was finished with that? Some heavy ass armour that cost a fortune to fix.
-
Yeah. I gotta agree with these guys. Oblivion is the most boring game I have ever played. I've beaten the main quest, the mages guild, the dark brotherhood and the theives guild quests already, waiting for it to pick up. Once you get over the expansiveness and eyecandy, there's really nothing there. I mean, it's an RPG, so the combat isn't especially fun. A ton of sidequests to do, but there's no motivation to do them or care about them at all. They're all involving doing mostly the same fetch-um/basic RPG combat and busywork, for undeveloped characters so you don't really care and with no storyline motivation behind it. Closing the oblivion gates are all the same thing over and over again, except one, where you have a timer. Collect 20 of this and that. There isn't really much of a story, and I think an RPG lives and dies by it's story. And then it was over, leaving me utterly disappointed and feeling unsatisfied and unconnected to any character in the game.
The fantasy dwarves/elves/whatever genre really turns me off, but I thought I'd give it a try. I like other RPGs, including the final fantasy series. But this game, it's actually terrible. It picked up a little after I got noctournals cowl, and that opened up another level of freedom. I went from town to town to kill everyone in the game. But you can't. Guards and townspeople respawn. Main characters only get knocked unconscious. I wish I hadn't spent the money on it. -
Seconding the KOTOR and Fallout calls.
But I still haven't found a game I've enjoyed as much as FFVII. It made me feel cool to play video games. -
So what made it sell well and become popular? I'm sure it must be something else. Unless you count emo teenagers with spiky hair, predicatable storylines, and dying babes as a selling point, I wouldn't bother any longer.
Seems like everyone's already mentioned the good RPGs on the PC. And there is obviously a lack of turn-based RPG games on the PC and if you do fancy those types of RPGs, you might as well get a game console emulators for the PC. -
You just defined videogames.
-
I believe you've missed out on some good games =/
