i don't think the gamepad thing is a steam issue, for what its worth.

Ok I just got my xbox 360 controller just last week, so it's such a coincidence that you posted. Anyway it works wonders for Bioshock (steam). I bought Bioshock because of the post on this forum saying it was on sale on steam for 15 bucks and then because of all the hype with the enthusiastic replies and high review ratings. Then when I played it man I wasn't impressed not that my notebook couldn't run it (it runs very smooth with maxed out graphics on my SLI notebook) but that I just didn't feel after being so addicted to Call of Duty 4. So I kinda was told take focus on the story instead, and treat it like a roleplaying game. It kinda change my perspective and I kinda started getting into it, but still never fully captured me. So I went out and bought Gears of War (retail) again because of the enthusiastic posts on this forum, I tried it with keyboard mouse but read it was better with Xbox 360 controller, so I went to my local radio shack and saw one on sale for 30 bucks and thought a might as well see how compatible it is with the games I owned. Anyway , I tried it with Gears of War and found that it played more precisely with keyboard and mouse but still played alright with the control, so I thought I wasted 30 bucks until I tried it with Bioshock and WOW! it changed the game into a console version on steroids. The controls are more intuitive and the screen menus are changed and a lot better (imo) also you get a graphics option that lets the program tweak the frame rate so you get smooth graphics on the fly. Yeah the Xbox 360 controller was well worth it just for that. Then I tried it with the Orange Box (steam) doesn't support nor does Prey (steam) and Call of Duty 4 (retail, don't know if Steam version supports though) so I googled and came up with Xpadder! Xpadder lets you map keys to your controller so you can play games that don't support the controller. At first it seems complicated and you'll dread having to learn it but that ain't so. I just googled Xpadder tutorial and went to the youtube video tutorial link and man it's so simple. Anyhow I'm still getting the hang of it but get Bioshock and Xpadder freeware. Bye

FREEWARE? Xpadder sounds great wow i cant believe its free i downloaded pinnacle game profiler and love it but after 30 days you have to pay $19.99 so i dont know if its worth it, thanks for the advice though vicious its great, the only weird thing though is when you play it seems like it gives the game some MAJOR slowdown for about a minute it happens every 5-10 minutes it looks like the game is freezing but its really lagging bad and then it returns to normal anyone else have this problem?
Jacob did you ever try Pinnacle before? Also im shocked that orange box, or COD4 dont support gamepad thats fine, it's nothing pinnacle/Xpadder couldn't fix. My next STEAM download after PREY is Bioshock for sure thanks alot for the heads up on Xpadder though! -
As for trying Pinnacle no I haven't it came up on my search but heard had to pay for it so I just chose xpadder cause a lot of ppl were raving about it too. I'm not sure about the COD4 version on Steam if it has options to enable the controller cause I bought my copy from Walmart.
One last thing too that may benefit us both is I heard of XBCD drivers for the Xbox 360 controller and if used in conjuction with controlmk you have total tweakability of mapping the buttons, analog levers, and analog triggers, but I haven't downloaded it yet. So if you do and learn it before me fill me in on how complicated or simple it is to use. Thanks -

Xpadder I have heard of it, Pinnacle works fine for me. The reason its so great is it works with like every controller.
I got involved with it because I personally like my wiimote more than any controller and you can not use it on your computer by normal means. Pinnacle lets you use it tho. Its not working on my PC so I got to know the guy who makes the program and have been his beta build tester trying to get it working 100%
Some games support it nativly, GRID does, Devil May Cry 4 does. Also I used to use the XBCD drivers and with those any game that supports a windows gamepad worked easy with it.
The wiimote > all tho
If you ever played Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii, thats exactly how you can play shooting games on the PC with it! point the remote at the screen and shoot! and as you move the controller to the edge of the screen you turn, plus you can do a jerk motion to jump or reload or anything like that. I also like it because its bluetooth, no cords no hassles. -

Yeah jacob, i'll let you know anything i find out via PM because i usually try to find out everything about a program once i start using it i'll definitely check the youtube vid out. yeah jacob you dont have to pay for pinnacle though the first 30 days are free, it costs $19.99 it isnt such a bad price either. XBCD huh? i keep hearing people talk about i'll scope that out as well and let you know about it when i do.
wow that's unbelievable vicious i have all next gen systems and i do have metroid 3...how does it work without a sensor bar? Wait nm i see you said bluetooth i have a 7811fx i wonder if i get a bluetooth express card if it will work, but wouldn't that mean that the wii mote has bluetooth built in? Wow screw the 360 contoller haha i'd prefer the wii mote. -
if u are talkin about steam-specific games, then u can just click on some of them. there will be a little index on the right hand side of the game's page, when u scroll down. it will have icons indicating what the specific game can supports.
p.s. - i just got bored and bought team fortress 2. anyone know any good servers? -
Yes, NBR has our own TF2 server! I don't think anyone's on it atm though... search this forum for "NBR TF2 server" and find the thread.

thanks alot houston LOL, a huge thread and nobody told me about the gamepad icon, i dont know how i missed it on the game info page i didnt realize they would have put it way on the right side(who would look there?) i have TF2 for 360 i was thinking of the orange box but after having the 360 version i dont think i'll take the purchase unless it falls to a REALLY good price, hmm vicious do you have any link to how to make your own sensor or can you point me to one on sale? I wanna make sure I buy the right thing -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I did not yet get around to building my own. I didnt see the reason since you can buy good wireless wii sensor bars for $15 and building my own would have costs about the same.
The only advantage to building my own was that I was going to tailor it to my laptop and make it ultra small and have it run off USB.
Before you go invest in any purchases tho make sure you have the wiimote working on your PC, and that you feel comfortable messing with glovepie & ppjoy (or if pinnacle works for you)
More details in my wimote thread.
Im totally going to be rocking out the EEE 1000H with my wii classic controller & some snes games here soon I think.
little 10" laptop, it will be with me at dinner, the doctors office, my car, its going to be my new appendage. -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
that would be awesome id be doing the same thing if i had the EEE, what do you use for your wii config? Glovepie, ppjoy, or pinnacle?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
any 32bit OS I would use PPJoy + Glove Pie
However PPJoy does not work on x64 so thats how I found Pinnacle as an alternative, it has the ability to map the controller as a windows game pad with no complications at all so its much better for the normal person who is not techy or does not want to mess with programs/scrips but for me it doesnt work so thats why i am beta testing trying to figure out whats wrong. -
i think u JUST missed a sale on steam. i remember they were havin a 50% off sale or somethin, a week or 2 ago. tf2 is only $20 usd right now, so i said what the hay.
edit: nub questions - 1) how do i change my in-game name? 2) how do i search for the NBR server? -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
UGHH, lol thats ok Houston about the sale i'll get it next time i see company of heroes and i am REALLY interested but i dont know if its a good game and the demo is 2gb, no thanks, haha it'll take too much time i might as well find out from people who have played it in person.
Yeah, vicious im gonna check that out and let you know how it goes thanks for the advice though bro.
