So, i see on a lot of forums people asking if they could play this game or that game on their quadro cards. A lot of people shun them because they are quadros and not Geforce cards. Well, to help the debate here is a list of games that I have played successfully on my quadro:

Devil May Cry 4 (med/high settings, 1280 res)
    Quake 4 (med/high setting, 1024)
    Half-Life 2 (med/high settings, 1024)
Dead Space *beat it and loved it :D * (med/high settings, 1280) xtra smooth
Left 4 Dead (med settings, 1024)
    Fallout 3 (med settings, 1024)
    Doom 3 (med/high, 1024-1280)
Prince of Persia 2 and 3 (maxed out, 1280-1440)
Jade Empire (nearly maxed, med shadows i think, 1024-1280)
    Resident Evil 4 (plays great)
    Civilizations 4 (med/high, 1024-1280)
Grid (low/med settings, 1024, sucked anyway)

    Unsuccessful:
these games played, but at horrible frame rates unless I took a serious dive in quality

Assassins Creed (your not missing much anyway) ;)
Overlord (don't see why, nothing too impressive there)

    Future Test:
    GTA 4
    Latest Prince of Persia
    Call of Duty 5
    Lego Batman

Usually games are playable as long as advanced shadow effects are capped at low or medium, usually medium. The same goes with HDR on some games. Everything else works pretty decently on high.

So if video card is a deal breaker for those looking for a laptop to casually game amongst other things, you can get by decently with a quadro. Don't expect to max out your games though (that's what desktops are for). I was a lil worried about it when I first got it, but after beating dead space with it,
i know i'm covered for any light gaming needs i have between classes. Hopes this answers someone's questions out there.

This is very helpful. I have the 140M card, but haven't tested them out extensively like this. Great list, much appareciated.

GTA isn't going to give that thing a fighting chance. It's a good mid-lower end card, but GTA is a Goliath.

call of duty world at war: all fx, no filtering, no shadows, textures at normal, 800
Can't win them all. At these settings, maybe a lil higher depending on your ram and cpu is playable. Would prefer a higher res, that's about it, I can live without the shadows. Still looks very good though. This is like airplane/summer break material on this laptop.

    Prince of Persia is next

There's a difference between the NVS and FX, and their purposes. It seems like your NVS 140m is equivalent to something like an 8300m GS, which explains it's very poor performance, while something like the Quadro FX 3700m is more equivalent to a 9800mGTX. To compare your card, you'd have to compare it to the 8300m GS, which I would assume is very similar.
This is a little misleading because quadro cards can perform excellent in games, given that you buy the right one.

    I think you're right...

I played Doom 3 in a Dell Lat d830 with:
    A quadro nvs 140m (256mb), t7300Core 2 duo 4m (2.00ghz), 2.00gb ram, and xp...

And i think it was more than ok, it looked cool...

Now i want to play call of duty 4, ANY ONE KNOWS IF IT'S VIABLE?...

    Thanks...

i know there is a big difference and it's not really meant for gaming. I'm really using it for school with ArcGIS, they just are under appreciated. Like I said, it does a fairly decent job for casual gaming.

Prince of Persia: playable, would like a lil more. res at 960-1024, low graphics quality, wide screen, no filtering. I get a decent 30 at these settings. performance gaps with an increase of the effects. I could play at 960, but I will just play it on the desktop, the game is too beautiful to waste at such a low res.

you should mension that this card overclocks as hell :) .. thus making it up to the level of 8600gs/gt

mine runs at 650MHz core and 900MHz memory, and I play games daily on it.

    here:

    Quake 4 (med/high 1280)
Quake Wars: Enemy Teritory (med/high 1024)
    C&C Tiberium Wars (high 1400)
    Call of Duty 4 (med/high 1024)
    FarCry 1 (low? 1024)
    GRID (med/high 1024)
Assassins Creed (high 1024) <- runs very good, and is very nice game :D
Heroes of Might & Magic (high 1400)
    Anno 1701 (high 1400)
    NFS Carbon (high 1024)
    NFS Most Wanted (high 1280)
    ...

or in other words, I can run almost any game at minimum of 1024x768 at high detail with good framerate.

P.S. Mine is the smaller one with the 128MB RAM only, the 256MB version runs even better

    What are your temps?

My friend has a ThinkPad T61 with the NVS 140M (128MB) and temps at max load (playing Crysis low @ 800x600) is 85* C.

Its the same card as a 8400gs, it will run the same games at roughly the same level

hmmm... I thought about over clocking it. I'm a lil worried though because I fried a 7800 gtx last time I played with over clocked a video card, you can't exactly replace these. What do you use? rivatuner? It's been a while since i was an temp checking speed demon on my systems.

    overclock with Rivatuner,

    cool down with TPFanControl.

mine can not pass 71 deg C whatsoever now, lol, when overclocked to 650/900 core/memory. I can drop temps even lower but thought I'm gonna play kinda nicely on the fan, lol.

I've set it to hit max fan speeds when either the CPU or the GPU hit 70 deg C, and by the time the fan speeds up(takes 10 to 20 sec), the temps go to 71 deg (occasionally to 72 but very rare), then those drop to below 70 and the fan slows down again. Then they rise up to 70 and same thing repeats ... thus keeping stable temps at about 71 deg C.

if I run max fan speeds all the time (not temperature controlled), I think it can drop max temps to about 65. But in general, all temps below 80 are fine anyways. From 80 to 90 you should watch out. Above 90 is no good.

my CPU is undervolted since the past 2 days or so, thus helping in reducing the CPU temps by about 10 deg C, which is very good. And since the CPU and the GPU sit on one and the same heatsink, this heps the GPU run cooler as well. But games are not so much CPU dependant so it doesn't get very hot anyways.

    P.S.
max fan speed is about 4600rpm, where the stock (latest BIOS) speed is about 3000rpm .. so 50% higher :D

Uh, no. The 8600mGT still has twice the US's, which makes it much more powerful. Just because you up the clocks doesn't make it as "fast as an 8600mGT."

Ive had my 8400M GT overclocked since March 08 and its still running VERY strong at (600/731)...stock was (450/600)

No artifacts, no graphical glitches...no overheating.

    Running 100% stable.

with the help of a notebook cooler ofc ;)
