    Hi,
Don't know if this is posted elsehwere(sorry-noob here, and haven't figured out search yet) but, was specifically wondering what games run good on a Dell 1520/8600M GT 256MB/WSXGA 1680x1050? :err:

Actually ordered the 1520 because I tried running DiRT on my e1505 with an Intel T7200/2GB RAM/ ATI X1400 256 shared/WSXGA 1680x1050,and it ain't happenin :frown:

Youll run every game there is out right now.

For new games tho you have to run on medium. But for older games you can run high. Games like bioshock will be good on medium and games like bf2 will be good on high.

bioshock runs on high at lower resolution.

heres a little trick, if u have a TV thats 720 or 480 run it on that. it will look better at lower res and u can easly play it.

o.k. Thanks for the info ppl!
So I assume DiRT will run good?
I really really wanna run that game and it stinks that I bought it before realizing my e105 wouldn't handle it.
    Love 1680x 1050 too!
As a side note, read on here somewhere that with 1680x1050, AA isn't neccessary?
AA has always confused me, so any clarification about AA would be extremely helpful!! :spinny:

simply put anti aliasing removes the distortion produced when a high res format is displayed in a low resolution. So when you higher the resolution the "jaggies" and rough edges caused by the low resolution are reduced so AA is no longer needed as much and if you put the resolution high enough to where it virtually gone no need for AA.

I dont think you can play DiRT at 1680*1050

I tried at 1280*800 at high and it wasnt smooth at all, had about 10fps :(

    Vostro 1500 /w 8600GT btw

Let me comment on two things I have read here.

First, in terms of high resolution + AA you don't really need to have AA on, especially with a small screen 1680 x 1050 on a 15.4" screen has a very small pixel pitch, meaning the pixels are small. As a result of this, the jaggedies are small so you can barely notice them. On a 22" screen with 1680 x 1050 resolution, it is somewhat of a different story. Because of the higher pixel pitch, one can expect that a little AA won't hurt so much because the jaggedies will appear bigger.

Second, I don't know that DiRT will run at 1680 x 1050. You may be better bumping down to 1280 x 800, you should be able to run that fine. 1680 x 1050 is tough for demanding games like DiRT. Best thing to do with any game is to try it out and tweak the setting until you optimize FPS and looks.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    yep

you probably can't run dirt smooth on high at 1680x1050

the 8600gt has a 128bit bus and its performance scaling is very poor as resolution is increased aa is tacked on

Stalker plays at 1680x1050 with static lighting pretty easily as does far cry,R6Vegas doesn't,even with minimum settings,in fact I can't get anywhere near that resolution with playable settings, standard default goes to 800x600 and there are not a lot of settings you can reduce in this game,I still think this is the most poorly coded game yet as it doesn't even look that good IMO

    umm,
Noob here! Don't know all the techy stuff, like frames per second, etc. and had a hard time getting these shots. :err:When I changed from default res to 1680x1050 there was some stuttering. To get these shots I had to lower resolution and go windowed mode. But running it from initial setup with no changes to res, just switched the controller to x-box, it worked fine.

I hate high detail post processing in bioshock cus it makes it so hard to see enemies that are firing at you.

Playing at higher resolutions takes more toll on the GPU compared to playing at a lower resolution with 2x or 4x AA. I play most of my games at 1280x800 with 2x AA and my screen has a 1680x1050 native resolution. Jaggies are hardly noticable. I couldn't see the difference between 2x and 4x AA, except for the decrease in performance. I'm gussing playing at 1440x900 with 2x AA on an 8600M GT should be more than enough eye-candy.

    yup-
Glad ya asked!!! This was THE game that caused me to buy my new lappy, (see my sig), cuz it wouldn't run on my e1505 ATI x1400 256 Mb shared. :frown:
DiRT acts like it's gonna freeze, but once it starts, it works fine!!!!!! Didn't change the default res tho
