Only two games ever scared me. The first one was when i was 12 and played Resident evil 2 and the crawler spiderman looking guy poped out a window in the basement of the police station. I remember I flew back and almost cracked my head on my wall.

My second one might be a big shocker!!! Counter Strike source.
I went to a server today at the ip of 209.160.36.103:27209
and all these ppl did was spectate.
Literally there were no ppl playing but every one was spec'ing for nothing.
    They werent even talking.
Then they said i was gonna die and that they know My MAC address and IP and they told me my state, I was freaked out. So i left and there you go

That's scary! WELL scary! I'd be well scared after that CSS thing! I'd try not to worry though.

Qauke 1 scared the cr*p out of me! I don't generally like eerie games tho...

I scare people out of teamspeak channels after asking that they leave and they ignore the request by saying, "its ok, I know his ip address..."

FEAR was scary. But that's because I played it with sound all the way up and in a pitch black closet without using the in game flashlight.

Silient Hill (all versions) at night with lights off, and decent speakers or headphones, scared me good.

Oblivion is definitely great for atmosphere, especially in dungeons

Resident Evil is pretty good too.

Agreed. RE was more of the "Boo!" kind of scary. Whereas SH was a more psychological freak you the F out. Which is harder to pull off and way more effective, in my opinion.

The same comparison goes for Doom 3 vs FEAR. Doom 3 was all "BOO!" while FEAR was like, "wtf is going on?" and "AAHHH!! freaky little girl get out of my head!!"

HL2 a little in the Raveholm level with barely any ammo left, and have the flying monster things come flying at me.

Also Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube...never finished that game.

Yes Silent Hill was scary for sure. In a suspenfull, creepy, what the heck is going on kind of way. There was also a scene in Eternal Darkness for Gamecube that scared me. It was this hullucination (spelled that wrong) where this body appeared in a bathtub. Awesome game BTW.

Doom 3 is the only game that really scared me. Unfortunately, I also didn't like the game much, so never got very far in it. (I mean, if a game makes you feel uncomfortable/freaked out/scared, and isn't even fun to play, why bother?)
Only played a few minutes of Fear (Or rather, watched my brother play). Didn't look scary to me. Freaky, yes, weird, and really really cool. :D (Very few things really scare me that way)
Good story/setting/atmosphere that made me want to find out wtf was going on. Doom 3 failed at that. It was just zombies turning up behind you in a dark corridor, going 'BOO' and scaring the daylights out of you. Scary, but not really worth playing.

About your CSS experience, IP addresses are easy to find. Mac addresses almost as easy. State is simply a matter of doing a dns lookup on your ip.

None of that is very mysterious, and none of it helps them find out anything else about you. They can tell which state you live in, and which ISP you use, and that's it. What are they going to do, kill all customers of that ISP in your state? ;)

RE2 was great... I remember it was a December night, and my friend slept over. My brother forced him to play RE2 in the dark, with the Christmas tree the only source of light, giving off an eerie red glow. He was pretty pissed off.

I dunno what I'm scared of. I'm really vulnerable though :)

FEAR and Oblivion have their scary moments.

HL2 + Ravenholm + the first time you face those howler zombies (the ones that climb up pipes and jump around) = feeling very uncomfortable.

Anyone played 'Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth' ? I would classify that game as disturbingly scary. Freaked me out :p

A game worth mentioning is The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. That's a pretty scary game, especially after you get out of the prison and are in the caves.

Riddick was a very tense game, especially when you don't have any guns and all of the other guys do.

The cave was scary cause you were fighting aliens and none of the guards, which are your main source of ammo.

I know I keep raving on about them, but the System Shock games were downright creepy.

The only thing that scares me about CS:S are the abuses of the English language you'll find on most servers... :p

I'll second (third, fourth?) the vote for Ravenholm in HL2. That game + loud stereo setup + dark evening + nobody home means that the howlers scared the living daylights out of me. Especially cause i had like 3 shotgun shells left... and that worthless pistol.

EDIT: However, I must say that chopping zombies in half with huge saw blades and the grav gun is very very gratifying... what's the most zombies you've gotten in 1 shot? My record is 5.

Nobody's mentioned Clive Barker's Undying yet? creepy, creepy game.
Of course, the first game that truly scared me was the very first Alone in the Dark - playing that at night when you're about 10 is scary as heck, I can tell you...

Don't worry about that IP address thing. The MAC address? Not a chance they know it, MAC addresses only work up until the local network. So, your MAC address isn't visible past your router, your router's MAC address isn't visible past the next upstream router, etc.

As for IP location, look here: http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

I typed in my home webserver's address ( 24.9.38.35 ), and it figured out I live in Denver, CO. There are geographic lookup services that have locations tied to IP addresses, as well as the fact that many routers have location information in them. For example, this snippet from a trace to another server:

    Code:
     4: 10g-8-3-ar01.denver.co.denver.comcast.net (68.86.103.1) 10.648ms
     5: 68.86.103.146 (68.86.103.146) 10.628ms
     6: 12.124.158.17 (12.124.158.17) 11.971ms
     7: tbr1-p013302.dvmco.ip.att.net (12.123.207.162) asymm 12 36.983ms
     8: tbr2-cl31.sffca.ip.att.net (12.122.12.133) asymm 11 37.122ms
     9: ggr3-ge110.sffca.ip.att.net (12.122.82.169) 35.207ms
    10: 192.205.33.82 (192.205.33.82) 36.195ms
    11: ae-2-56.bbr2.SanJose1.Level3.net (4.68.123.161) asymm 12 36.046ms
    12: ae-0-0.bbr1.LosAngeles1.Level3.net (64.159.1.125) asymm 14 47.602ms
    13: ae-21-54.car1.LosAngeles1.Level3.net (4.68.102.108) asymm 12 46.251ms
Notice how it's starting in Denver, jumps around a bit through some unspecified IP's, then gets to Los Angeles? Many ISP's name their router nodes geographically. You can get information from them, too. It's not hard to spoof some of this info, but you get the idea... if they can see your IP (you connected to their server, so they can), they can see roughly where you "live". But they wouldn't be able to find you or anything like that... it was just some kids playing games because they found a service like I linked to.

You realize the rules of counter strike are that you can't hack or your banned?

if they had HACKING material to hack other peoples pcs on CSS they'd be banned in an instant.

That would've been a perfect time to knife everyone to death, then scream like tarzan...

OK here is the list in no particular order:
    1) Silent Hill
    2) RE all of them
    3) Doom3 (good story to follow regarding this one)
So Doom3....kinda scary game but not really. Unless you are playing at around midnight with the lights off and full 5.1 surround sound at about 3/4 volume going as your wife is out with her sister and a few friends. Long story short I had been playing for about 2 hours when a hoard of those spiders comes out of everywhere and are attacking me. Unbeknown to me the wife had come home and I didn't here the garage door or anything...I did say 5.1 surround sound right? Well she snuck up behind me during the spider battle and lightly flicked all 10 fingers about my head and neck. [IMG] I came totally unglued and shot the chair straight back and jumped about 10' which is possible as I have vaulted ceilings. After my wife had a good laugh and peeled me off the wall she asked if I was coming to bed or not. I did go to bed but I couldn't sleep as she had taken about 10years of my life away with that little prank. I do have to admit though, while she was playing FEAR on my laptop I did sneak up and pay her back for that. :D Although I was pretty sure the laptop was a goner as it shot halfway across the room (landed on the couch and didn't suffer a single problem short of the mouse going an opposite direction) [IMG]

I thought HL was much scarier minus the fact that I was around 13 when I first played it. The blocky graphics made the zombies much more scarier. HL2 was just fun: watching the physics engine go berserk when sending a radiator into a pile of crushed cardboard boxes. :)

I played Painkiller on my XBOX at mid night on a huge 50" LG Plasma TV using high def cables and a pretty decent 7.1 surround sound system... Holy f*k i was screaming and ****..

Then I played Doom 3 and when my dad banged on the front door to get home (2:30 am I believe) I flew off the chair i was in and smacked my head on the floor and I was afraid to get the door...

My Lesson: Play scary games when you're not alone.

Doom 3 was the same thing for me, most of the time I could not play it at Night.

First few hours into it, its close to midnight, and I have my Logitech Z5300's at a good level, and those spiders and flying skulls scared the crap out of me.

Silent Hill for me-all of them. I haven't even gotten past the school level on the first game. Mind you, that was when it first came out, I've got more balls now, literally ;) . I love the resident evil games though, I feel that the tension and shocks compel you to play even more, its not the same psychological approach that Silent Hill has. But I do remember playing the first Resident Evil and having the beejesus scared of me and my mates. The date in the intro movie just so happened to be the date we were playing it. Needless to say, as a bunch of school kids, we crapped ourselves

Har har, go on, start laughing

This has given me the urge to buy some Silent Hill games now :)

I'll second the Alien versus Predator 2 vote (although I'm voting for 2 ---- never played the first one) on the Marine level the first time through. Yipes.

The Thief Series has always really managed to suck me in... and they always throw in a level or two that is wicked scary. On the most recent release (3 years ago now??) the abandoned orphanage mission forced me to take multiple play breaks (playing with big headphones, in the dark.. eeeeep). I can't remember the name of the level now.. hmm..

And hey, how about System Shock? The second one was pretty freaky at times ------ the first one also managed to scare the crap out of me on more than one occassion.... but, then again, I was 15 (1994, right?).

RE4 definitely had its share of jump-out-at-you scares --- but nothing, for me, like the ones above.

And ha HA! I'm actually playing HL2 for the first time right now, and just got to the mission everyone has referenced. Those fast things move.... fast.

EDIT: OH! Did anyone else play Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for GameCube? The first few times when the game starts 'messing with you' were pretty shocking.

Enough of us have played that *shudder*

I'd also like to ad FEAR. That game can get quite creepy at times.

Fatal Frame scares the crap out of me the most... especially the recent one I played Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly. All your enemies are ghosts, and your only defense is a camera.
The entire game is set in dark atmosphere, and if you weren't facing a ghost trying to kill you, it might be a white form in the distant walking by. From start to finish, I don't think there was a moment I was prepared not to jump out of my seat.

Yea, for sure. At the beginning of the post I talked about how I got spooked when a body appeared in the bathtub.

I just finished FEAR the other night, I must admit that game had it's moment. You know those guys that are like invisble and move really fast? Well, the first time they came out they scared the hell out of me, especially because they are usually in front of you and behind you. For the rest of the game I was scared that they would show up and surprise me again.

Operation: Flashpoint scares me. There's nothing worse than the threat of dying and having to sit out the next 3 hours.

Ultima VIII: Pagan for me. I was a kid back then, and the giant spiders - they'd really outright slaughter you early on - scared the **** out of me, without even talking about the wraiths.

Dear god I must have nearly **** my pants with one of those swift moving purple-red eight-legged monsters running after me.

There was a game called D for PS1. Was a sort of psychological thriller/mystery. Friends and I always played it as a group because it was too scary for us to play on our own.

Games don't scare me, but I did have an interesting thing happen recently.

I was playing Doom 3 in the dark, just go to a room with a quick moving zombie (near the beginning, the medical labs), and my highly intelligent cat decided to jump on the chair behind me and put her paw on my back......

I think she did it on purpose too
