    Third person shooters?

Honestly, the PC's niche is FPS, most of everything else usually goes to consoles at some point, or at the same time, barring some MMORPGs. There are several different genres and an enormous amount of games out there so, 'recommend me a genre' is rather difficult. Care to narrow it down a bit?

Game demos? I'd recommend, if you haven't already, try playing RTSs like Age of Empires III, Company of Heroes, and for a first RTS I would recommend getting Warcraft III battle chest.. you can probably get a great deal for that off ebay. Also consider Age of Empires II and Starcraft if you want even lower priced games.

Now there are also MMORPGs, which can be extremely fun as long as you don't mind paying monthly fee (unless you get Guild Wars, a no fee game).

Or if you like micromanaging and building rollercoasters, consider Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, or 3.

You can probably get demos for a few of the games listed here.

A few titles off the top of my head...

Third-person action: Titan Quest, GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, demo of Just Cause.
RPG: Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights 2, demo of Dark Messiah M&M.
Adventure (old-style point-and-click): The Moment of Silence, Return to Mysterious Island, Sentinel.
Driving/racing: GTR2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Test Drive Unlimited.

the FPS genre got a tad stale for me as well recently. Went with 40K Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. Refreshing break.

Company of Heroes is a blast. Another big plus for it in my opinion is the outstanding training scenerio.. it's not boring, very easy to understand, teaches you a lot, and doesn't take but about an hour. A rare thing for a game.
