Has cross-system compatibility or being able to play online games with people on different systems been invented yet?

There are all these games that come out, and they've now been coming out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. I'm wondering, are there any games yet that allow everyone to play against everyone else no matter what system you're playing the game on?

    Is this a possible option?

I seriously think this is something that could benefit and in all honesty, I think this is something that could work.

My friend recently said how he's done with fps games on PC because Halo on the Xbox 360 is so fun with everyone he plays with. I personally don't own an Xbox 360, nor am I very good at using the controls on the Xbox, so if there was anyway that I could still get in on the action without an Xbox, then that would make it a lot funner for me because I could be on my PC playing with my friends who are playing the game through Xbox.

I say this because such games like The Orange Box came out in a ton of systems, and if there was anyway to allow Multiplayer online gaming to verse each other, then why don't they do it?

It's possible indeed, various developers have stated they have done it themselves, the problem isn't so much getting it to work, but getting the various companies to work out the legalities and what not.

For example Shadow Run is playable online between PC and Xbox 360.

Edit: I believe the exact developers I am remembering were Neversoft with Guitar Hero III, and Epic with Unreal Tournament III. Could be others, and I could be wrong.

The only cross platform compatible games are either with Windows and XBox Live, and one of the Final Fantasy games on a PS2.

This is an idea that may benefit consumers, but would be detrimental to the companies, esp. Microsoft. Microsoft has set up their very profitable Live system, and I don't see them pairing up with arch-rivals Sony and Nintendo. Nintendo is using the inane "buddy" system, and a late-comer to online gaming, while Sony's set up, but still in the beginning stages.

They dumb down aiming on console versions of an FPS because it's impossible to get precision aiming with any console controller.
Whereas you have us with decent comps with megapixel quality laser mice that can snipe the hair off an enemy soldier 300m away running at resolutions far higher than most TVs will go (assuming its a gaming rig with a great LCD).
So to create cross-compatibility, they also dumb down the PC version in multiplayer in these sorts of games? The result? No added benefit from all the extra expensive PC gear, which is the primary point in playing on a PC in the first place.

I was going to say Shadow Run but was beat too it however you have to pay to do so if your on the Pc, and shadowrun is honestly the worst waist of my money on a game in my entire lifetime. It runs so poorly, has no content, is so buggy, and there is seriously no pc support or severs hardly it almost forces you to pay the montly fee to play against xbox players wich is unheard of for a fps game, ontop of that xbox player seem to have a good advantage over you because they have an auto aim of sorts because they use a controller.

Unreal Tournament 3 will span the platforms.

First with PC and PS3... then Xbox360 as well.

We will see who will frag the best... mouse/keyboard or controller. :D

For UTIII on the PS3, you can also use a Mouse and Keyboard.

Auto Aim is weaksauce... thats why the consoles have mouse+keyboard options now.
