few years back there used to be games like F22 raptor, F16 etc.
are there still fighter plane based games in high def?
or any aviation based games?
Flight simulator is one i know..but what are some other options?
-
-
IL-Sturmovik is probably the best WWII aviation simulator
-
i wantted to try rise of flight which is a WW1 plane simulator but it had this stupid drm that required you to be online all the time.
wings of fury is the updated version of il2, havent tried it though -
Tom Clancy HAWX is a fun current modern fighter game if you aren't looking for overly realistic. Great graphics as well.
EDIT: also, the previously mentioned Wings of Prey is a great WWII sim with gorgeous graphics -
You may want to ask in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=204469
Lots of flight sim aficionados there -
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
There aren't many good new combat flight sims unfortunately.
HAWX is just a joke. -
Just because H.A.W.X. has more arcade-style gameplay and isn't extremely realistic doesn't mean it's a joke. It's quite fun to play...if I wanted a flight sim with 100% realism...hell, I'd just join the Air Force and get paid.
-
I too used to play those games back then. I just bought a hotas to go with my Eyefinity setup and was looking for a Flight sim too, I realised doing that, that there isnt as many as there used to be back then.
So I got HAWX. Forget hawx, its a boring arcade game, very simplistic, and pointless IMO. I tried, but there really isnt a point.
I got IL 1946. Good game, dated, and doesnt support Eyefinity.
Then I got Wings of Prey, the sequel to IL 1946. And man I am glad i did, very very good game, amazing graphics. Story line is so/so, multiplayer is fun, immersion is GREAT -
Yeah, I agree with ya Mastershroom, HAWX is far from a joke, but also as I warned not very realistic. That doesn't make it a joke though. Is actually really fun, just more in the Blazing Angels style than IL2 or Falcon 4 way. Still a good game though.
So, guess that leads to the question, what kind of plane game are you looking for? Absolute dead on realism as USAPatriot obviously prefers, something action orientened, or somewhere between?
The most modern hardcore flight sim I can think of is Blackshark
http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/
Wings of Prey is somewhere in between (and is fairly adjustable from realistic to arcade):

To the previously mentioned HAWX:

All are great in their own way. None are a joke, and it's partially that attitude that has killed the sim genre unfortunately IMO -
Hum, here you go, High Def Fligh sim
ok this really has no purpose other than showoff.
Watch this for some real nice vid of the game. It should give you a fair idea of how HD it is.

The guy said he played f16 and f22 raptor, you cant tell him to go play HAWX after he played both those games, thats just no possible.
Looks good tho. -
GAaah! I can't believe I missed the Steam half off sale for Wings of Prey a week or so ago. I went to go order and when I did it was over...
And F16 and F22 if he's referring to the Novalogic games those weren't quite hard core. They were arcade-like combat flight games.
I like HAWX and I've delved hundreds of hours into Falcon 4 and IL-2 over the years, so I agree it's not a joke. It's a fun combat flight shooter. Good change of pace IMHO. -
Im sure there will be another soon enough
About f16 ad f22, its not about hard core, its about the gameplay compared to HAWX (mebbe im not getting it, I just hated that game!).
EDIT: damn you edited your post.
Falcon 4 was my first flight sim, actually probably the first PC game i played throughout. Man the memories, I loved that game. -
well lock down and its squeal were quite realistic... in fact they looked more realistic than IL2... i would also try wings of prey.. its realistic and for those who want it arcady , it arcady!

guess we'll change this thread title to "Purpleskyz hates HAWX and has a pimp monitor setup to showoff"
HA, just messin' with ya
Wings of Prey is gorgeous though, and honestly, it suprises me how well they optimized the game engine, runs GREAT. -
Thats actually what I thought when I played it for the first time, how well optimized it was. Hear that people, its massively optimized, buy it, now. -
I found HAWX to be quite fun to play in coop with friends, but thats it.
And i want to thank everyone for mentioning other flight games, looks like i got to check out the " internjetz". -
thinkpad knows best Notebook Deity
Combat Flight Simulator 1, FTW, it was awesome and if refreshed and kept the same physics engine it used way back in 1998, would be excellent, i'd recommend it. I love how it had no DRM and was completely open to any files you wanted to edit, so that you could change up textures, add literally thousands of flight models, add custom physics properties to any flight model or edit existing ones, change weapon damage impact and effects, and without any stupid patches for file chekcs, god i still have the CD and love it.

Someone mentioned this but if you wanna try your hands on a realistic helicopter sim, try DCS: Black Shark
A 300 page manual of how to control the copter is in you hands.
But then again as everyone had mentioned, IL2 is still by far the best WWII sim out there. -
-
(1 char away from 10, darn) -
-
Aces High is a free WWII-based flight sim with a pretty huge selection of planes. I've had some fun with that one. Definitely worth checking out.
-
And maybe I'm missing the point, but I wasn't too fond of NovaLogic's gameplay either...I bought a couple of their 'sims' because of the screenshots on the box...but they were un-installed relatively quickly in favor of F-22 Total Air War, Flanker, Jane's F-18, Jane's F-15...
I love arcade-ish flight sims (Ace Combat for PS, Crimson Skies), and I really enjoyed flight sims when I had the time to master them...and, for me, HAWx isn't as fun as Ace Combat (not the same mission variety and there's a pseudo-sci fi element to Ace Combat that HAWx never embraces...'Look at me...I'm flying inside the massive floating mothership cannon launcher thing-y at 500 mph to take out its energy plant') and not as fun as Crimson Skies, but it's worth a play through for the right price...
But to the OP's question...
Someone mentioned "the sequel to Lock On"...not sure if you can call it a proper sequel...more of an expansion...'Flaming Cliffs'...and supposedly 'Flaming Cliffs' is being updated to the Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) engine used in Black Shark...and will be compatible with Black Shark (eg, your friend can pilot a Black Shark if he or she can get the helo off the ground while you can fly an Su-33 Flanker-D...your friend won't have much fun in head to head...)
That's probably your best more-than-average realism fighter sim bet...that or an F-18 on FSX: Acceleration (nice flight model, nice graphics but limited combat missions)...
For WW2, IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 is probably your best bet for more realistic combat...
And I haven't played any WW1 sims since Flying Corps but some people seem to think very highly of the recent crop... -
i loved crinsom skies ( i still have it for my pc) also like the squeal high road to revenge... was awesome but more of a arcade game than a flight simulator...

i've tried lock on with windows 7 and doesn't work lol...
