I am planning on purchasing the Inspiron 1720 with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 at 2.2 ghz
2 GB RAM at 667 mhz
nVidia GeForce 8600 GT
WUXGA Resolution (1900 / 1200)
250 GB HDD at 5400 rpm
The games I commonly play are usually not especially grahic intensive, with games like "Need For Speed Carbon", "Madden NFL 07", and "Roller Coaster Tycoon 3". Although I don't typically play games that are more graphic intensive than the ones listed above, I would certainly enjoy the flexibility to play games like "Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe", and "F.E.A.R". Could someone tell me if the configured laptop above is sufficient to play all above games at comfortable settings?

Sounds like a good configuration. You should have no problem playing the games you mentioned, and new ones. The 8600GT is the second best DX10 mobile card from NVIDIA, beaten by the 8700, which is just an overclocked 8600.
Processor and the other stuff looks great, including that 250GB hard drive lol.

will the high resolution present an issue with gaming performance?

The higher resolution might lower your frame rate, and some games don't support WUXGA, so you may have to change your resolution so that the game supports it.

will that cause a huge reduction in image quality?
