So I'am a gamer who is an engineer, and I'm looking for a best of both worlds card, if it even makes a differences. Which card series are better suited for both.
Geforce or the Quadro; the Radeon vs the Firepro/FireGL.
    ie:
    Dell precision Nvida Quadro FX3700,
    vs
    Dell XPS 16: Nvida 435M

    Programs used:
    Solidworks, Catia, Mastercam. Starcraft 2, CoD2, Civ5

Its more of a general question then specific

i don't know much about the nvidia side except that the gaming version have a hardware lock preventing them form runing cad soft at full power

ati radeon can be soft moded to perform like thier firegl provided there is a fireGL equivalent of the said card

The general rule is that work station cards are optimised to be precise and accurate whereas gaming cards are optimised to shove out as many frames as possible since perfect image quality isn't really a concern.

If you need it for work and you do CAD then I'd go with the workstation one. It'll manage a lot better although might not fair so well on the games front, although that's not to say it will be bad. The only other downside is the price really, workstation cards cost a lot.

Generally, the high end Quadros tend to be the best overall for workstation/gaming but they also cost quite a bit more than their FireGL counterparts, so does price play an important factor for you or do you want ultimate performance?

The gaming GPUs are slightly faster in games (than their direct professional counterpart). The professional GPUs are way faster in professional programs, but are much more expensive.

The FX3700 will beat the 435 either way, as the FX3700 is based on the 280.

On the gaming benchmark 3dmark06 Averages:

    FX 3700m: 10847

GT 435m: I think its get around 7000 or 7500.

    I would get the Precision

Is there a FireGL equivalent of the mobility 5830 (based on the desktop 5770 die, same as mobility 5850 and mobility 5870)?

    You have m5800 = 5730m, and the m7820 = 5870m, there's nothing in between AFAIK.

The FX 3800M is based on the GTX 285M (I think it exists lol, either way it has extra shaders compared to the GTX 280M). The FX 5000M is based off of the new GTX 480M, but has less shaders (in between that and the GTX 470M).
