I've been using a pair of Beats headphones that came bundled with my hp envy for a few years, pretty happy with the quality so far and you can fold them in half, which makes them a bit more portable.

The CM storm Sirus which I'm using is excellent OP. Bass can be pushed to tremendous levels and a very good point with it is that it's actually one of the very rare REAL 5.1 (all 7.1 and most 5.1 headsets are only achieved virtually). It's much cheaper than the ones you're looking for, which are probably not even 5.1 in reality given the size of the speakers (they are 5.0 cm, so I can't see how there would be 4 speakers on each side A as needed for real 5.1).
Edit : it requires you to play with the equalizer for some time before finding the perfect bass / highs balance, but once you've done it, you will likely never have any second thoughts on your purchase.

I've been using the Razer Carcharias for several years now and love them. Excellent drivers and overall depth of sound. I still don't know how to pronounce the name though.

They've had the living hell beat out of them and continue to work fine.

Here you go: Pronunciation of carcharias - how to pronounce carcharias correctly.

    lol

I've been using a set of Logitech G930 for a while now, and they are great quality. That's the wireless version. I think the G35 is the wired version and cheaper too.

Using a pair of Siberia V2 Purple Special Edition (can't stop saying special editions, sounds cool)

Either way they are great, but surely cannot match the insane TB XP500, they are awesome, got a friend with a pair... so soft and awesome :D

The ones I linked are one of the very few real 5.1 headsets.
The quality is very good even though they're not 800$ Bose. I can hardly imagine having a better quality for less than 200 or 300$ though. And don't worry about the card of your laptop - the console has an integrated 5.1 sound card. Actually you may get better sound quality from the jacks, but using the integrated sound card allows you to use the console (I think you can't if you're using the jacks).

Just because its a real 5.1 headset doesn't mean it does any real good :p

I use a pair of Sennheiser 598 I found online refurbished for like $100 off. They aren't surround but they do sound great and one nice thing about analog is no silly drivers to deal with.

Real 5.1 headsets are a gimmick. True positional surround sound is achieved by placing speakers surrounding the listener and having a wide sound stage. The positional difference between individual speakers in a 3 inch wide ear cup is not enough to develop any real positional audio, and the surround effect is still achieved through virtual processing means. The only difference between a headset with virtual 5.1/7.1 and real 5.1/7.1 (which is actually still virtual) is the price.

There's also a headset with speakers in the headband, but I can't remember the last time I heard something with my hair. More speakers does not mean better.
