So that is to say that I should be opting for the 256 MB x1700, as opposed to the 512 MB 7600 go? If anyone has used either of the cards for Tomb raider: Legends, can they tell me whether it's still playable with NexGen Graphics on? I kno that it reduced my desktop 6600 to a proud 2 fps........

Both will play the game just fine, probably on high/max settings. The X1700 is slightly more powerful than the 7600 Go. The amount of VRAM does not matter in this case.

    3DMark....'03.....'05.....'06
    Go 7700...10100...4200...2700
    Go 7600....7800...3400...1900
    X 1700......7200...4200...1850
    X 1600......8000...3500...1800

I got these off the graphics card thread... does this mean that th 7600 is better than the 1700?

No, as I said, the X1700 is more powerful than the 7600 Go, but not by a lot. We could talk ROPs, pipelines, vertex shaders, or fillrates, but bottom line is the X1700 is the successor to the X1600, which matches the 7600 Go step for step. The consensus here is that the 7700 Go > X1700 > (X1600 = 7600 Go).

EDIT: 3DMarks are somewhat finicky to begin with. One version may favor one company over the other.

I can understand pipelines, fillrates, et al  , but at the end of it all, i've found, at least for desktop cards, that an apples for apples comparision b/w ATi and NVidia doesn't lead to anything but confusion.. But I think I get your point. If I get a 1700, w/o too much of a price premium over the 7600., i should get it, isn't it? I think i would have got the 7700, were it available in India. Actually, I am not much of a gamer.. But want that nfs should run at the highest settings, and games like UT, and devil may cry 3 can run at the highest settings, along wd any new FPS that may be released. So all in all, I should be able to call it a respectable laptop. Hope that's not being too optimistic....

    Thanks

EDIT: Goin by th pixel/vertex pipelines, 1700 should be a much better card than the 7600, and should even beat the 7700... why isn't it so? Does it consume much less power than the 7600/7700?

Have a problem on my hands.... Apparently the only model available in India is the F3JC, with a T5600. It's much less than my expectations, and now i am totally unsure what to do. Shoud I go ahead and buy it anyway? More importantly, would this laptop still be usable after 3 years? Because that's how long I will be stuck with what I buy now.

Honestly, if you can't find anything that suits you, there's always ordering online, though you might need to pay a bit more. Many doubts that the T5600 can last 3 years but I may be wrong.

yea I think there is a 400 3D mark difference between the Go7700 vs x1600. So if you could not tell a difference between a 8800 and a X700 then you probably will not see any advantage to the Go7700.

By the way some games will max out on the x700 so you probably will not see much of a difference with a 8800 but if you were to try a very demanding game like oblivion... give it a try you will see what I mean.
