Sorry, I know this is stupid question and if it was covered in the sticky I'm really sorry. I'm not a gamer but thought I might buy me a gaming laptop when I upgrade soon. My question is what do you gamers consider high resolutions? And how powerful of a GPU do I need to a high res?

BTW being able to play a game smoothly on a WXGA would seem great to me since I can't even play a game smoothly on a 640 x 480 res right now.

High resolutions are basically 1620x1050 and up. 1440x900 and around that are normal resolutions, and 1024x768 and lower are low res atm... atleast according to me :D

    Would a 8400m run games at a 1440x900 or would it take a 8600m?

Depends on what other settings you decide to activate within the game. I think an 8400 can handle 1440x900 but you have to switch off lots of other features such as AA and AF to maintain playable framerates.

Never turn off AF unless your on an integrated card,,

on an 8400 of any kind, you will have to turn down the Shaders, and turn off or make shadows min to play at that res, ... and you'll never be able to use AA in any game..

Currently the only game I want to play is MVP baseball 2004 or 05. I feel sure that it can handle these with ease, but I might want to try some more modern game too (I haven't looked around to know what there is right now). What about on a WXGA, since that's what I was planning on getting.

The 8400M will handle that game at WXGA res with no problems. These days a 'high' resolution depends on the context. I consider high resolution to be 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) but for laptop gaming I consider 1440x900 to be high resolution considering how demanding games like Crysis are.
