Hi. I should soon have a dell xps 17, and I was wondering what would be some good game (demos) to download, so I can see how well it performs.
I will probably make a thread and post them there for other people to see, so more well known games are probably better.
At the moment I plan on testing it with: Call of duty 4, Crysis, Metro 2033 + Starcraft 2.
So are there any other (free) game demos, which would be good for testing out my new laptop (or just for general fun)?
Thanks

Ooh thanks a lot. Never knew that existed
And i'm pretty sure you can play in max setting in most demos. -

No most true demos are locked with only specific settings, functions, and areas of the game available. The Crysis 2 demo is a perfect example as it's MP only, same thing with the COD:BO demo that was available.

If you're looking for software just to benchmark, without actually playing a game, I would recommend you use 3DMark06 and 3DMark Vantage by FutureMark. Those benchmark apps will run a preset graphics run, hammering your GPU, and spit out a score.
The primary benefit of 3DMark benchmarks are that they are standardized testing platforms that use pre-set resolution and graphic detail settings. This allows you to directly compare one score to another. If your laptop gets 5,000 in 3DMark Vantage, and my laptop gets 3,000 in 3DMark Vantage, you can confidently say that your laptop is 66% more powerful in gaming performance than mine. You can't do that kind of standardized scoring with game demos, because the graphics settings and resolutions will vary from one system to another, and will greatly affect the framerates that you get. -
I'm looking for demanding game demos to test how good my new laptop is at gaming. I'd have to be able to turn the settings up to max though (and i'm pretty sure you can in all those games I listed).
I suppose I could try 3Dmark. It would be more useful for comparing with other cards. I wouldn't know what a good score was though, since it's easier to visualize frames per second. -

Anyway, any demanding game would be a great benchmark, such as Metro 2033, GTA IV, Crysis. I would get 1 high profile game from 2009 (batman arkham asylum), 1 from 2010 (Bad Company 2), 2011 (crysis 2).
EDIT: use fraps to observe framerates in game, and take note on what scenes the fps counter in the corner drops to minimum, while observing where the number hovers for average fps. -
Steam has plenty of demo's and makes it easy to install and uninstall them.

Could you please tell us your GPU?
Also, IMHO, the heaviest game is Metro 2033. Has amazing graphics, but is very heavy.
Finally, a game that is not a console port, but a PC port ( it is available in the X360, but 4A Games said that they have ported the engine to the PS3 too, but didn't find it profitable to make the game there ). -

Yep, then it's only 5-10% better than mine
Apparently, my 5730 IS future proof
Gaming benchmarks?
