    Gaming in college blocked?

For a quick intro, there's internet in every dorm room through an ethernet jack (hooked up a router though) although they set the connection to shut down every minute for a second or two then boot back up. I can understand it's to save bandwidth and to prevent illegal downloads but it's frusterating because it eliminates all videos, gaming, or legit downloads unless you plan to do them in less than a minute.

I then found out that there's wireless access in the floor lounge and laundry room that doesn't cut out every minute but it doesn't allow games (just tried both America's Army & BF2 and they don't work). Now I know that nothing much can be done inside my dorm room but I'm guessing the lounge network is just blocking some ports and this can be worked around right? (I'm kind of a novice so if I'm sounding really stupid just let me know).

I haven't tried anywhere else on campus even though it's all wireless because I don't game in class and I can't see my self gaming in the library (I get kind of intense at times  ).

So is there any way to work around the block? I understand why it's in place but sometimes I just want to let lose from college stress and I can't, and I already have a bunch to do when I go home every month besides squeezing gaming in.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the Networking forum because it kind of applies to both. If it's in the wrong place could a mod kindly move it? Thanks.

Are you attending an all-boys/girls' school? If not then I wouldn't be focusing on online games 'to let loose stress' if you know what I mean. ;)

Try to find a game that's not blocked.

(We're not allowed to talk about bypassing blocks on this forum, so I wouldn't bother asking about that.)

In my Uni, all Valve games are blocked (CS overload maybe?) but they allow us to play games like COD4. Which is great since COD4 is amazing.

If you like BF2 I can pretty much guarantee that you will like COD4.

i had to deal with this is my school.... it's not worth it!!!

just try and get a portable service or something from another provider.

since im got in canada, i went to rogers and got a portable internet subscription, 20 a month after discounts and i got 1.5mbps, if your worried about over use, you can always use the schools internet for everything else.

i only ever used the portable internet and never had any over usage problems.
