With the bright glossy LCD screens that plague us so, it certainly makes sense to turn the lights off and use our laptops without the glare and add a layer of immersion that only a darkened environment could. Although it certainly feels as if this is terrible for our version. This is aided by how many frequent computer users suffer from blurry eyesight. A quick Google search does not return much research on the topic.
Based on my own experience, I think that even just using a bright screen with the lights on for a few hours at a time has a damaging effect on eyesight that will only continue to blind us - computer users of the only generation that will debatably have to deal with this issue (we can expect more than a few solutions in the future).
For now, as my light bulb went out and I have almost immediately began feeling eye soreness, it does feel like this would effect my already-horrible vision. That being said, while computer use in the dark may be a literal eye sore, the darkness can do wonders for gaming. Though at the distance some of us use our laptop displays at (I'm only a couple inches away as I write this), it does feel like our eyeglasses strength, as well as need for glasses at all, is more than genetics at play as some eye doctors believe.
Until somebody provides evidence proving me wrong, I will be keeping a light on and the screen dim enough to remain comfortable

staring at a computer screen in the dark isn't bad for eyesight. Reading or sewing in the dark is though.
Lots of women went blind in their old age during the 1800's because when they were younger they frequently continued sewing clothes long after their candles had burned out at night. Causing massive repetitive eye strain over several decades. -
more eye strain? probably if it is too bright
damage eyesight? not sure.
I personally would dim the brightness in dark (which is the only reason I hate my external monitor, why cant we get quick level of brightness zzz) -
All i have to say is this. Does watching tv in the dark hurt your eyes? NO. Does going to a movie theater which btw is usually dark when the film is playing hurt your eyes? NO. So a laptop screen shouldn't hurt your eyes.

Despite screen size, a movie theater is comparatively easy on your eyes. Try staring at somebody using a bright laptop in a dark, or heck in some cases even a fully-lit room. That's a lot of light being shone onto their face. In a movie theater? Not really noticeable. At that distance of just a few inches, especially in the dark, it seems that the effect of "burning" your retina is actually very damaging to eyesight.

I find that it strains my eyes. I just turn on a nearby lamp or something.

It's easier on eye strain to not have it completely dark.

Baka likes it completely dark ._. Any other light sources tends to be a total distraction

I don't like gaming in the dark as it's really straining my eyes.
I'm almost never reading or gaming in the dark and if I feel my eyes getting strained I stop doing what I'm doing. I'm in my 30's, still have a good eyesight, still don't need glasses *knock on wood*, while the rest of my family do need glasses for reading and for everyday usage. It could be sheer luck, but I also really take care of my eyesight. Plus - I just don't like gaming in the dark. -
Using a screen with easily distinguishing colours in the dark is no problem to the eyes as much as those in which there are dark and mixing colours for example games in which you have to accomplish night missions or movies in which the frames change so quick and are dark (e.g horror movies) and it takes more time for you to distinguish between colours than the frame rate that causes a serious damage to rods and cones in your eye ratina which is responsible for the ability to see in the dim light. And if rods and cones are damaged they lead you towards night blindness.
Doing office work without a light on your computer is O.k but not for a long time. So, have told you the biological disadvantage of using computer screen without a light in the room. May be it further helps convincing people not to use their computer screens in the dark. -
your tv no matter what the size is at least 6 foot away from you. at a cinema the big screen is at least 10 foot from the front row of seats.
your computer screen is at maximum 2 foot away from you so how can you compare.
im blind in one eye and i know eye strain can lead to serious eye conditions.
it is recommended that you take a 15 minute break every 1 hour and not sit in total darkness.
only reported on the news in the last 3 weeks was 2 kids in america died trough gaming non stop for 6+ hours. -

Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
I think gaming in the dark is not a good idea. I personally find myself strained. I tend to be the people that have a desk light open when gaming. However, having a bright light can also cause headaches and mental pressure so to speak so I tend to dim the light a bit and work on my computer under low light conditions.

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Don't know if gaming in the dark hurts my eyes from medical POV, but after gaming only with my screen lit in the room my eyes sure hurt.

I head that you should not watch tv or for that matter a computer screen in the dark, as human eyes see better with some low ambient light, a small lamp or something, just so it`s not total black.
whether is`s bad for you i don't know, but it can give you a headache

In the past 30 years...
-I tend to prefer gaming or watching movies/tv in the dark
-My eyesight has not changed in the past 30 years (neither worse nor better)
-I wander about in what others consider complete darkness unintentionally scaring the bejeebers out of my guests and people I stay overnight with. Yeah I am the guy who doesn't bother to turn on lights and wanders about while everyone else bangs their appendages everywhere. (apparently my low-light vision is not affected either)
Whatever I am doing is right for me...
if you get eyestrain, or have issues maybe you shouldn't do it.
Whatever makes you comfy. -
