I want to buy a gaming laptop, and I can't decide what is better. AMD Turion or Pentium M (both at 2 GHz). Also, what is better, ATI X700 or the NVIDIA GeForce 640. This really help me out, thanks.

P.S. I would hopefully want it to run Doom 3.

The 6400? That's equilavent to a x600, so the x700 will be far greater then the 6400.

As for the processor, it's hard to compare since we don't know anything else you require.

Head over to the hardware forums, fill out the FAQ and make a new thread, that'll provide more information for us to help you.

But based on what you've told me, the one with the x700 will be more powerful, for games, the GPU is the bottleneck

Ok, well, to answer your question at what I require. It would be 2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, and HD doesn't really matter. This will be for gameing and schoolwork. Will this http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...ooks/compaq_presario&storeName=computer_store be good? Or this http://ibuypower.com/ibp/store/configurator.aspx?mid=163 . Customized to my specs that I told you, which one will be better for gameing. Both have the X700, so all i need help with is the processor. And I need to know now, because I am buying tomorrow. Thanks again.

Get the x700. As of today, pentium M is probably the better choice for gaming, but as games start to utilize 64 bit, I think Turion will be the better choice. Since 64 bit isnt far away, go for the AMD Turion. But, since its a bit slower and cheaper, try to bump up the speed.

AMD Turion is slower? So if you have an AMD that has 2 GHz, it would act slower than a Pentium M of 2 GHz?

The Turion only utilizes 33mhz ram, while the Pentium M uses 533mhz. Also the Pentium M has a larger cache at 2mb while the Turion is 1mb. However, the Turion has a larger FSB...

Unless you really benchmark it, there will be no difference, the GPU is what counts

If I get the HP with the X700 graphics card but Pentium M, in 3 years, will it not be any good since everything will be 64 bit, and most likely AMD? Or will it still run games pretty well? I only plan to have this laptop for 3.5 years, but I need very good gaming.

Oh yeah, and what if I get an AMD Turion (The HP special edition Lance Armstrong one), but it has ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M graphics card. I appreciate all the help.

The 200m is a shared memory version of the x300.

The x700 will run medium to high settings fine, but at the end of the year, it will lean towards the medium low settings.

So what does that mean, a shared memory version of the x300? Also, what would you get? Turion w/ 200m or Pentium M with x700. Please remember this is for gaming.

The x300 is a video card, its dedicated, is a pretty low end card. The x600 is better then it, but the x700 is WAY more powerful then it.

Do graphics cards really do that much toward the games? Doesn't the AMD processor make the L2000 just as good, if not better, for gaming than the V4000T?

The graphic card is the bottleneck.

    A 1.6ghz Pentium M/Turion with 512 ram and a 6600 card will do tenfolds better then a 2.0ghz Pentium M/Turion with 2gb RAM and a 200m card in gaming.

The Radeon X700 is about four times as powerful as the Radeon Xpress 200M.

Get the best GPU you can.

Ok, thanks, that helps. But last question, would you recomend a... AMD Turion, 2.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, and the X700. OR THE...Compaq Presario V4000T, Pentium M 2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, and the X700.

I'd go for the MSI - superior build quality. And, the Turion MT-40 2.2 will be faster than the Pentium M 2.0 in most applications, but I doubt you would notice it.
