Hi.I wanna buy a laptop for gaming.could you tell me which one is more suitable?can you put these brands in order,in terms of gaming performance?
Sony VAIO® VGN-AR730E/B 17" Digital Studio Notebook PC
Sony VAIO VGN-AR750E/B 17" Notebook PC
    Satellite X205-SLi2Toshiba
    Toshiba x205,s9359
    Toshiba x205,s9800
    Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV690
    Asus G2S
    Asus G1S-A1
    Dell xps 1530
َI have another question about Sli benchmarks. Is SLI technology worth the extra money? because there are many games on the market that do not support SLI. In a situation like that, would a single more powerful card be an advantage because the performance would be higher? Given that the models carry similar pricetags, which single graphics or dual graphis, is the better choice for today's gamer?
Sorry if this isn't a right place to ask the questions!

Always choose a single faster card over 2 cards in SLI. Always. SLI doesn't work for EVERY game, and performance increases are not always linear.

As for your mega-list, you can pretty much order them based on the graphics chip that they come with. 8800m GTX > 8800m GTS > 8700m GT > 8600m GT > 8600m GS > 8400m GT > 8400m GS.

Also, if you prefer to play at native resolutions, then don't choose a 17 inch at the 1920 x 1200 resolution unless it comes with an 8800m GTX/GTS.

I've never heard of Sony machines being particularly aimed at gaming, but I know that the Dell 1530 and Asus machines are geared toward that application.

You forgot Sager in your list and you need to rank it first. If you get a single 8800m GTX then that should pack enough punch and SLI won't be worth it when you consider cost and performance trade offs.

Storm you beat me by half a second.

a post in the 'what notebook should i buy' section of the forums may be pretty useful since it gives us information on your location and what brands will be easily accessible (for example in the UK, sager/clevo laptops are very difficult to get a hold of for a good price like in the US)

And to complement StormEffect's post, I don't think you can call any laptop with less than a 8600M GS a 'gaming' laptop. Sure, you can play some games on 8400s, but only older games, and in many cases only BARELY.

Is portability a factor here? Will it be used as a desktop replacement? That needs to be considered as well.

Dear StormEffect, your're right. But considering the prices,I didn't list some huge and wonderful laps such as Alien Dell 1730....Well,between Toshiba x205 s9800 which has a single 8700gt(512 dedicated)with Dell xps1530 with a single 8600 gt(256 dedicated),which one is recommend?

I would not really say that it ONLY plays older games, and also not BARELY. An 8400 series card CAN play any recent games at playable settings.

P.S. I also have a G not GS and I run current games fine.

Personally? I prefer mobility over screen size, so I'd end up choosing the Dell 1530, but if you don't plan to move the laptop around a lot, maybe the x205 would be a better choice for you.

An 8700m GT will be more powerful, but I wouldn't make the jump to 17 inches for anything less than an 8800m GTX.

If you are ok with a 17inch screen, have you considered the Sager NP5793?

    http://www.sagernotebook.com/product_customed.php?pid=51114&action=customize

You can upgrade to an 8800GTX and other decent components for probably the best price with Sager.

I made a quick custom for about $2600 there.

    - Chassis Color: Silver Trim
    - Display: 17" Wide Viewing Angles WSXGA+ LCD with Super Glossy Surface (1680 x 1050)
    - Processor: 45nm Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T9300 / 6MB L2 Cache, 2.50GHz, 800MHz FSB[+$135.00]
    - Video & Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX Graphics with 512MB DDR3 Video Memory[+$465.00]
    - Operating System: Genuine MS Windows® VISTA ULTIMATE 32/64-Bit Edition[+$80.00]
    - Memory: Special Offer - 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 X 2048MB) and Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX Graphics Combo Deal[+$35.00]
    - Primary Hard Disk Drive: 200GB 7200rpm SATA 300 Hard Drive[+$145.00]
    - Optical Drive: 8X DVD±R/RW/4X +DL Super-Multi Drive & Software

    EDIT:

But you can get a Dell 1530 with all of the same components except an 8600 instead of an 8800 for only $1800.

    Tough choice.

    The Sagers/Clevos rock.

Shame the $1150 plus free game ($1500 with T9300) is a done deal for the P6831. Hopefully they will re-surface for anyone looking for fun with a 8800M GS/512...and you have the patience.
