I had a visit from my younger cousin today. The conversation led to me asking him what I should get him for Christmas - to which he came up with quite an enthusiastic and optimistic response...

I've attached a partial screenshot of the notebook he wanted me to give him as a Christmas present. Kids these days... too spoiled and unrealistic :)

I know it's a bit OT, but couldn't help sharing my experience. It seems like a decent machine though

Was he actually being serious? That is one beastly machine though.

I actually think he was "semi-serious". He has seen me hand out some relatively expensive gifts in the past (to people who deserved it) and hence I think he thought he could "motivate" me somehow. Through hard work I have earned a decent buck and maybe the kid wanted to test me out

But there is no chance I am getting him that, let alone a notebook. In fact, I might just for the fun of it (with a degree of seriousness) get him a job/internship instead. He needs to learn the hardship and satisfaction of hard work and get to know the value of money. I started leisure working for my parents when I was 8 and he is 10 years older than that. It's about time.

But yes, if I was into heavy gaming (and had the time), I probably would be enthusiastic enough to get me one of those monster notebooks, going from LAN party to LAN party :) It sure is quite a contrast to my ThinkPad X61.

Ha ha, glad someone appreciates the costs :)

I absolutely agree, you have no idea what i had to do along with a 96 gpa to get the notebook in my sig, and that was off ebay. I actually wanted to split the cost but my grades were the icing on the cake for my parents (well my dad atleast :p ). ATM im learning how to use labview so i can useful to my dad at work and so I can get in some work experience before college in an environment im likely working in. I tend to be realistic about my gifts, but the laptop idea was kinda like "hey dad can i get a laptop (saracastic)" and he goes "...maybe" so i go " "

There are costs and then there are "I wonder how much my kidney will fetch on the Black Market" kind of costs. After decking out my m9750, it ended up fetching a pretty penny, but all hard earned cash. I appreciate the laptop all that much better now.

I could see somebody ask for laptop for school, college, etc. But after taxes and shipping this would top $8K. For that price you can buy an Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii and every single game worth buying for all those consoles, and game until your heart's content. Oh, and buy a high end HDTV to play them all on.

For that laptop, you just... get a laptop. I mean, does it even come with a quality carry case? Your own personal uplink satellite? Or even... a single game?

Pfft...I agree with the other members here.
    1) Wtf...who would spend 8k on a laptop? Unless you're an uber-mobile gamer/*rich* laptop enthusiast...

    2) I recommend giving him some kind of work plan, whether its month-long chores, succeeding in school, community service, etc.
Depending on how he works (and if you're rewarding him with money, how much he makes), that would decide what kind of laptop he would get.

    Just my two cents :).

Actually that's the same thing. Rebranded Sager/Clevo. Basically what you see on XoticPC/Powernotebooks/Eurocom/PCMicroworks..well you get the idea. But its fully decked out tho hence the price. The average D901C is usually only about 2.5-3k.
Eurocom for some reason has pretty steep prices on the D900/D901. I suspect a similar config on Xotic would probably come to around 5-6k. Still not chump change tho :)

Why not just find him a more reasonably priced gaming notebook?

Ok so its not what he asked for exactly, but you could pick up something decent for a lot less. Perhaps get him an XPS 1710 or 1730? Lot of notebook for the money, im sure come Christmas day he will be just as delighted with it.

That would be great even though i've had a similar experience, my parents were unable to find a wii before christmas so my dad asked for a box and put it under my stocking. It was horrible but i couldn't help laugh at the situation afterwards.

For Christ Sake,DO NOT BUY that thing. It is expensive as hell and it will not be better than what Sager makes of the D901C. Sager was the first to bring quad core into the laptop,as a desktop CPU,and will be the fastest laptop in the world once the 8800M GTX will be available for it, after the 6th of December. Do yourself a favor and beat the kid with a google manual

Very nice laptop, and I am glad you are not going to get your cousin this overly expensive gift. If I have $7000 dollars of hard earned money, I would spent it on something practical, for example: a car.

Rest assured he is not getting any gaming laptop from me. If his parents want to give him one, that is their choice. He is a good kid, but just too spoiled.

In any event, it seems that if one was to buy one of these, they might as well get the Black-Hawk from PC MicroWorks. Same specifications, cheaper and at least the web site inspires more confidence than the rather amateur like Eurocom site.

PCMW seems to be the best deal right now....i configured a 5971 with a core 2 extreme, 4gb of ram, and an 8800m GTX for about $2700 which is sweet...and if you wanted quad core and dual 8800's then its about $3300 for the D901 which isnt bad at all.
