    Hi,

I have an HP 30 inch computer monitor for my laptop. BUt, i want to hook up my PS3 via hdmi-dvi. Online it says there is no way to connect PS3 to the HP 30 inch because it does not support 2560x1600/dual link DVI. Is there ANY way aroudn this? I might as well return this if i had known this; it is useless if i cannot game with ps3/360. Please help==any suggestions

This isn't exactly a PS3 forum... But, there should be some kind of converter.

i suggest you plug in the ps3 with a 5 doller cable (dvi to hdmi from newegg) if that works buy a KVM switch so you dont have to switch cables. did you test it?

Well there are ways around it but it could limit quality and be costly. But if you bought a 30" monitor you probably have some cash to throw around.

First of all the monitor works thru dual-link dvi its made for computers only when it uses dual link dvi. If there is no other input mode, or if it does not support some sort of single dvi input for a lower resolution (look into those two things first) then you still have one option and thats to run your PS3 thru your computer.

You can do this with a TV capture card, or something like what I use the gamebridge, the gamebridge tho is only VGA quality 640x480 resolution so I doubt with a PS3 you would be happy with that. TV capture/tuners will give you alot more options and higher resolution tho. You may have to play with it tho since PS3 had HDCP or what ever its called the protection they use for digital video, and if it detects that your trying to "record" it may block you. But I doubt it since they are not supposed to actually implement that until 2010 if I recall correctly.

Realize now that there is no way you will ever get the PS3 to use that monitor to its full resolution, at the very best you may find a way to have it scale up 1080p but hardware scaling is usually not the best so I cant comment on the quality of doing that.

For your situation I think you would be much better off with something similar to what I use. A 37" HD LCD the model I have was a steal but they dont make them anymore so the price has nearly doubled, I recommend looking for a Sharp Aquios that would be my 2nd best pick, any size you want, just make sure it is 1080p and has the inputs you want.

For those interested here is my computer monitor I did a review of it a long time ago: http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10105

Edit: I spent the time to look up your monitor http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/382087-382087-64283-72270-444767-3297215.html It only has dual-link dvi for input so your only option is my 2nd suggestion. However note that it says right away that a dual link gpu is required to use the monitor on the main page, also its not in the home section its in the business section and thats because this monitor is targeted for people that would need the huge desktop resolution to do things like photoshop or open multiple windows at once, you wont be playing a PS3 or Xbox at work (well I have but thats a different story).

Look at my monitor I linked above its 37" and was only 1000$ shipped for me, I think you should look for something similar its 10x better for what you need.
