Gaming on a FirePro card.

Anyone here have experience with it? I'm considering a M4000 swap (7750M equivalent) into an older Dell M4600. The last time I attempted to game on a FirePro, it would randomly freeze every 15 minutes or so. I'm not sure whether this was a fluke or whether the card was overheating due to insufficient heatsink contact. Also, I recall not being able to find a current driver for the M4000 card from AMD.

Was my experience just a fluke, and how good are FirePro cards for gaming? Anyone here with experience can give me a recommendation? Thanks very much.

 

I am gaming now on the m6100 since it was a cheap GPU with good performance.

I also gamed on the m5100 which works in the m4600, with the custom vbios you can get it to 1Ghz core and 1500Mhz RAM unless you have samsung ram, they dont tend to overclock as well.

I never used the m4000 since the m5100 was barely enough to cope with the games I like to play, even overclocked.

You might have just had a bad card when you gamed on a professional card the last time.

 

Thank you! Notebookcheck says the FirePro cards are the equivalent of or slightly slower than their Radeon counterparts. Is this true in your experience?

Also, could you tell me whether the AMD FirePro drivers give you any trouble when gaming? I really appreciate all the input!

 

Thats usually because the core clocks are lower than their consumer counterparts to ensure the greatest amount of stability. As you dont want a driver crash while working on a project.

With the m5100 and a custom vbios you can get quite a large overclock, I had similar performance of that of the 7770 Ghz edition

No I never really had much issue with AMD drivers on the m5100 or the current m6100 I have in my Ranger at the moment. You will be missing some features of course if you use the consumer drivers but otherwise my user experience has been quite pleasant for my uses.
