Hey guys, I'm so signing up for new internet service for my place and I have the option of $40 50/50 or $70 for gigabit. I mainly game and stream Netflix on my connection.

For those with gigabit internet, did you notice any difference in gaming or is it just overkill and I should just save the money?

It's not for gaming. The speeds are irrelevant once it is higher than what the game needs. Ping would be more important which is your distance from the servers.

Gigabit is awesome for downloading and streaming really large things. So 4K60fps video, Tidal FLAC audio, and downloading games. Stuff like that.

And yes this is from experience.

Exactly what he said. Ping is king for gaming.

When games are breaking the 50 GB barrier in size, gigabit speeds can really help with downloading.

Leaning towards the 50/50 option although the chance to jump on the gigabit wagon is so strong.

Also consider if any of those options have data caps on them. The plans and prices you're describing sounds similar to AT&T Fiber, which has a data cap on the 50/50 plan but not on the 1000/1000 plan.

I have 1GB AT&T Uverse and I get down about 940mbps on average. My friend that has Charter 80mb internet gets nearly the same ping as me, as everyone said it really matters how close you are to the servers.

The only noticeable difference is my game loads faster than my friend's on things like Diablo, but we are talking like 1 second difference (I built both our PCs so that is not a factor).
